I've searched the internet high and low and ordered dozens of mousepads. All my research leads me to believe this is the absolute best in value and quality. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001762CBQ/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000Q8SEDQ&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1946YZE73R364H58F724 Allsop Travel Widescreen mousepad. It is barley 1/8" thick, Widescreen to match your monitor and is made out of the best cloth material I've ever seen. Get this mousepad, you will not be dissapointed.
These are also pretty awesome:

That's a nice, simple mouse pad. I like the widescreen design as well. Much in tune with what the OP was asking for I would think. He did ask for a minimalist mousepad after all. And about half of the recommendations here, while nice, elegant, and of excellent build quality, are all pretty large.
However, I used to have the Elago Travel mousepad, which is a recommendation of the Allsop mouse pad from Amazon. It used microfiber cloth material, which I really found to be cumbersome for smooth mouse travel. And I know it was travel sized, but man, was it tiny. I mean, very tiny. It measured 8.1 x 5.3. You couldn't hope to comfortably traverse a 27" iMac display with that thing. At least without lifting your mouse about a dozen times before reaching the other end of your display!
Looking at Allsop's site, it seems it's similar to the Elago. The dimensions are 7.25 x 11, which is just slightly larger, which is good I think. But it also uses a similar micro fiber material, which I personally don't prefer. However, looking through the site, I found they also have a larger desktop version of the widescreen mouse pad: http://www.allsop.com/mousepads-and-wrist-rests/widescreen-mouse-pad-black
Measures 13.5 x 9, which seems like a good size for desktop usage. Unfortunately, it doesn't mention material type. Too bad there's no white model too 🙄
