I had been using Pixea and it worked perfectly, until they released a new version with a status bar that stays on the image. This is annoying as I read a lot of sheet music in jpg and png format and the status bar is a distraction. I liked Pixea because it had no other menu bars when you were viewing the image.

I'm looking for something that has zero menu bars and zero floating status bars. I do not want a slideshow app, I want to be able to open each image in individual windows and have more than one image open so I can resize and reposition them.

What format are the image files?

If they're PNG or JPEG etc., then try opening them in a web browser. You simply drag an image file onto the browser icon in the Dock, and it will open it. You might also be able to drag it onto a window with no content, e.g. "Open tab" typically opens an empty tab.

PDF files may or may not be draggable into a browser. It might depend on the browser.

Once the image is open in the browser, you can adjust how it displays content, like turning off tabs, etc. and going into full-screen mode. As noted above, the View menu may be useful.

In version 5, every overlay disappeared if the mouse stopped moving or the mouse pointer left the Pixea window. That is what you seek, right?
I just tested version 6 and it only behaves slightly different. You have to do one of two things for the overlays to completely disappear after 3 seconds:
- Stop any mouse movement (same as v5)
- Activate any other program and don't hover the mouse pointer above a Pixea window (clicking the desktop suffices for Finder to be the active application)

In the meantime, if you have a Time Machine backup you could restore the old app version and disable automatic AppStore updates.

If you're using the app for viewing music related images (like myself), Forscore hands down is one of the best viewer/organizers (add Apple Pencil, and Ive retired paper/pencil/manuscript books)

PS> it could also be used for any image/doc collection

I use qView too.
Another minimalistic image viewer - Fragment Image Viewer

Fragment looks great - I will also give that a try. Thank you!!

Thanks for this, I had no idea something like this existed. I just bought it because it would be very, very useful to me. Thank you!

The ForScore "stamps" feature makes using music notational items quick and easy. (I created/imported my own 'commonly used' font stamps, so with the combination of the stamps+pencil you can quickly write out leadsheets, students exercises, etc)

+1 for the Sync feature too!

good luck with it👍

I’ve been very pleased with Xee, which is use in a Filemaker automation to display images (basically, FM opens the image in Xee).

The image is shown in a window that is sized to the image. Nothing else visible.

Not free, but pay once and you’re done. (Edit: it’s $3.99, one time payment, so dirt cheap)

I did use Xee in the past, I had no idea it was still around. Does Xee work on Sonoma?

It does! I’m using the latest version (Xee3) on a Mac Mini M2 Pro and a MBA 15 M4 without probs with the second from latest version of Sonoma (haven’t upgraded to the one that came out a week or so ago, because lazy)
