Minimum wages are useless. Finland doesn't have such a thing but no sane person works for less than 10€/h anyway since unemployment subsidizes are so high that difference between being unemployed and working for 6€/h 40h a week is amazingly small, taking into account that you need to pay taxes from your wage.

More on topic: I think it should be low and left up to the states to determine anything further past that depending on the economy in the region and all the other factors.

Why up to the states and not up to the people directly involved? The person hiring and the person with the requisite skills seem like the best people to negotiate an employment agreement.

OK, I'll give you $1.33 an hour to do my yardwork. :p

The minimum is there strictly as an absolute floor for wages. It's not designed to do anything other than ensure that prices of things have a lower limit, and that employers can't pay sweatshop wages. It's a holdover of the 20's & 30's labor movements. Well, that and too much Dickens.

Now, if someone can negotiate higher, fine. But what if some person says they'll do the same job for half the current minimum? Without a legislated lower limit, it's a buyer's market, and the price drops as supply goes up. Notice, though, the government doesn't tell you how much you can make, only how little.

I said that assuming a minimum wage would exist. I am opposed to one, but that is politically unlikely.

i believe min wage should be dictated by market forces aka have no min wage at all

in other words, there will be an equilibrium for workers that will work a job at a certain wage. if wage too high, too many workers apply, if wage too low, not enough want the job

I would have an easier time taking this seriously if your username wasn't "dukebound"

I bet your parents are really worrying about where their next meal is coming from.

It's these types of emotional appeals that does little to nothing in terms of forming any type of substantive argument. Do you even understand the inherent disadvantages of a minimum wage?
