Hi all,

Let me introduce myself first. My name is Jeroen Diederen and I am the developer of MintPPC, which was quite a known project back in 2011. The idea of it was to have a solid Debian system, together with a lightweight desktop environment (LXDE) and a slick graphical layer on top of that. Another thing that I found important is that it is easily installable and that it takes away the pain of having to search on the world wide web for answers how to get your wireless Airport card to work for example. These are things that should work out of the box. I think I achieved that back in the days.

We are now eight years further and unfortunately, there is not much support for Linux on PowerPC anymore. Debian ditched PPC out of their release cycles and we are now left with Debian-ports. Recently I found an old PowerBook G4 in a drawer somewhere in my house. I was sick at the time and I had nothing better to do, so I decided to try Debian sid. That worked fine and then I thought about my old days. I started looking on the net about MintPPC and to my surprise, as I really didn't know that, people enjoyed MintPPC!. I stopped working on MintPPC after my first son was born and never looked back. I had no idea that for some folks it was, as I read somewhere, a stroke of genius. I was flattered and thought that I might be able to achieve the same thing once more.

This is how this project got started. We are now a month further since the inception and things are starting to work out. I have a desktop environment, based on LXDE and recent Linux Mint 19. I now also have my own installer, based on Debian-netinstaller.

For those who are interested in this project: you can follow me here in this thread or at my own website http://mintppc.nl. I don't own mintppc.org anymore, it was bought by Amazon for ad revenue. I hope to get it back in the future.

Let me first thank you for reviving your project.

I think a lot of people who were afraid of all the fiddling to get Linux installed on a PowerPC, had an easy solution utilizing MintPPC to get a feel of what Linux could offer to our old-but-sturdy PowerPCs.

I've used Mint in the past (on PC), and think it will be great to have a modern PPC version for our old G4s :)

Thanks for all your work.

Cheers :)

I think that the return of MintPPC will draw attention once again to Linux on PowerPC, because, as you stated, many people loved the past versions. This is just the boost it needs. Welcome back!

I've enjoyed using Mint on X86 machines and also installing it for people as a replacement for Windows. It's probably my fave desktop distro, so this is wonderful news. Dare I ask, will G3 machines also be supported with a lighter version? :)

As per MoerBoer above - really interested in whether this is to be G4 only or maybe G5 (iMac here) and G3 will follow?

I tried VoidLinux on my 15'' PB, last generation, the first linux which a small repository but very stable! with Debian unstable I had always problems with the keyboard backlight module and some other major and minor glitches. I'm eagerly waiting for your installer! I would be a good idea to make this topic a sticky thread!

MintPPC is Debian. You will have the same troubles. We will try to find a solution. Register in the forum if you need help.

It will run on all G3 up to G5 hopefully.
That's great news, thanks vm for confirming.

In case you want to build a list of potential trial hardware - have a stable iMac G5 ALS, 2.0GHz, 2G RAM with the following;
  • Powered by ATX PSU
  • 2nd SATA HDD via IDE to SATA converter in place of Optical Drive
  • ALS sensor removed during PSU swap - could be reinstalled
  • Airport card - WiFi & Bluetooth -has Bluetooth no longer working - not yet replaced
  • Remote sensor recovered from old MacBook and plugged into one of USB ports

Will we get desktop YouTube for G3s back?
The browser this G3 used is Midori. mint PPC allowed G3 Macs to play desktop YouTube and even though this wasn’t perfectly smooth it was playing at 360p and would play smooth at 240p.
Youtube on a 400mhz iMac G3 in 2015

Why does everything have to boil down to youtube playback? If I want to watch a youtube video, I just pull my phone out of my pocket.

Why bother with PPC at all then? If you want to browse, why not pull out your phone, reach for a tablet, open your laptop. Ironically, Youtube playback is still something you can still do comfortably on PPC...whereas general browsing not so much.

Because browsing the web is much more comfortable in desktop format, whereas watching a YouTube video is more comfortably done in FHD @60 FPS on my iPhone. It is a matter of personal preference, I suppose.

At the risk of being a bore...that was 2015, we're now 4 years later and the delivery mechanism for Youtube has changed,

Then a X86-64 desktop or laptop?

If all I’m doing is posting on a forum, or reading a news article, it doesn’t really matter. I actually prefer to use my PowerPC laptops for forum posting, because they have excellent keyboards IMHO.

Ok guys, we are now very close to the roll out of the alpha release....I am testing it one last time. If it works I will publish the installation instructions and you can start downloading the installer and install MintPPC!

PPC OS X, Linux, and OpenBSD are all on the verge of great achievements now.

Exciting times. :)

You could probably still do that (or get something close) on Tonvid instead of bloated YouTube. Give it a shot.
