has anyone ever gotten this to run on a geforce2? I have it all installed and I can get to command prompt using nouveau.modeset=0 but that's as far as i can get. I don't know what else I can try.... I'd really like for thsi thing to be useful again, its such a shame to have to get rid of it, or convert the guts to modern hardware..

You might also want to try to run a kernel 4 in sid. Pointers to do that:

wow! thank you so much for that advice, I will take a look and see if this is something I am capable of....very much appreciated!

If you want to test the new installation please go ahead now. It should all work now. Please let me know if things are not working or if you would like to have something added.

Will do! I will try later tonight and report back! I’m super excited for the machine to be in its full glory!

Short report:
I have installed MintPPC64 on my G5 2.3GHz, 6GB ram, Radeon HD 6450 in slot x16, GeForce 6600LE in slot x8.
System installed with iso from 31.03.25 and after installation boots quite ok (see below- small xfce problem). By default GF6600 gives picture without any distortions or black screen.
Because I want to use Radeon HD i have generated xorg.conf file with Driver changed from amdgpu(default) to radeon (doesn't need any changes in BusID!!!)
One problem I've go was some xfce elements couldn't be loaded but after reinstallation of xfce everything start working well.
BIG THANKS to Jeroen for his work!!!!

MintPPC XFCE

I checked this myself and I got a xapp-status-panel loading error now, something I did not see when I made this work more than a year ago. I will have to look into this.

Edit 30.4. 19:54 BKK time
I made some progress (see picture). I need to get the mint wallpaper installed by default.

Edit 30.4 23:03 BKK time
The wallpaper issue has been fixed in a new version of mint-xfce-default-settings.

To be done: fix the broken power-manager

I fixed the bookmarks problem (in the picture you see a /home/jeroen/Music is not valid error) in PCMANFM in a new version of mint-lxde-default-settings. To do this yourself:
amend the file
path to home/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks
And point to your own folders.
Edit: you have a dual processor G5, you should install an smp kernel.

I replace bookmarks manually, takes seconds 🙂 but thx for the right way method.
Kernel is SMP:
Linux debian 6.12.29-powerpc64 #1 SMP Debian 6.12.29-1 (2025-05-18) ppc64 GNU/Linux

It would appear to be...
I just completed automated installation of MintPPC64 on my G5 dual 1.8 this AM using the Debian 12-6-25 iso burned to CD... Running smooth as silk...

Never mind, it was my connection to the www. It was working but not well. Got the preseed to load!! On my way now!!

I am trying to do an install of MintPPC64 on my G5 Cheese Grater. Loading the preseed failed. I've checked the address multiole times and know it's correct but I keep getting the "failed to load" message. Has the preseed address changed from:

There is mention of making sure the web site is up, but by virtue of having gone to the site to print the instructions I got the impression the site is up. Is the a way to "test the site"?

I had this distro completely loaded and operating on all cylinders except for being able to drive two monitors (one of which is an Apple Cinema Display). I went searching foe a distro that could do that and failed. So I came back to reinstall it and ran into the preseed issue.

Any assistance would be appreciated

The address didn’t change. If you click the link you can read the preseed file yourself. I am very busy with my new house so I can’t be of help now.

Finally got Mintppc64 loaded (back) on the G5. Working fine but at this point in the process (It’s only been installed for about an hour) the web browsers don’t work. They try to start up but then, nothing. I went to the properties of each browser and the browsers’ file sizes are 0kb. Apt install says that the versions installed are the latest. Will do some more research but I don’t remember this being the case on an earlier install so I’m guessing I need to tie something together or tie something off.

BTW, I have given up on trying to drive Apple Monitors from Linux. I was never able to get it accomplished.

Mintppc64 is awesome and I can’t wait to get it fully set up!
