I asked them if it would be released any sooner and they said it wouldn't be. Oh well, still really looking forward to trying it.

Without the vertical movement there'll be a big learning curve I think. Wait and see I guess!

Pretty cool. Loved the bit where he typed on his arm :D Given how well that idea could be implemented where space is cramped and a regular keyboard wouldn't fit, these guys might be in for some solid patent dollahs in the future.

Skeptical but very interesting. Seems to rely heavily on the auto correcting algorithm. It's how well that can cope in general use outside of its defined (English US) parameters.

Irish, Welsh, Scottish names, places & colloquialisms all may cause it to struggle for example.

Certainly worth a go when it is available though just to see and experience.

However sometimes.. Things are the existing way they are not because of inherent legacy of bygone days, but because fundamentally they happen to be the best way to do it, regardless of how long around they've been around.

This is something I would find useful on an android tablet in landscape.

For a long time, one of the reasons I always preferred landscape slider keyboard phones is that the keyboard does not cover up any of the screen when I am typing. Now that this form factor is pretty much extinct, I have always been annoyed at how much of the screen the keyboard on a touch screen phone takes up. As much as I love SwiftKey, there are times when I simply cannot see what I'm typing because my landscape keyboard takes up 2/3 of the screen. The portrait is not as bad only taking up half.

When I saw the Minuum keyboard a few days ago, I was blown away. I really like the text prediction of SwiftKey. I would love to see SwiftKey and Minuum merge to come up with a keyboard as compact as Minuum and has the text prediction capabilities of SwiftKey.

Off topic but I was talking to a guy on the metro yesterday who had a Droid 4. I never used a slider keyboard phone before, I have to say I thought it was pretty cool. Typing without the keyboard on screen was really nice. And I thought it was cool you didn't have to use it if you didn't want too. You could just use on screen keyboard for a quick text reply or something.

This company is really onto something IMO.

My first smartphone was the Nokia N97. Then I switched to an HTC Desire Z. Both of these had a landscape slider keyboard. I like the fact that when I typed anywhere, I could see so much more of both what I typed and the surrounding objects outside of the text box.

SwiftKey was the one keyboard that made typing faster and more accurate than I could do on a physical keyboard. It still doesn't address the screen real estate issue. In fact, there are times where the keyboard covers up the entire text box because the web site/app I'm typing on forces ads to show up pushing the text box below the top edge of my on screen keyboard. Very annoying.

Great concept. Virtual keyboards really do take way too much screen real estate. Text entry is just a difficult thing, this looks like a step in the right direction.

I got an email yesterday about the beta being released today. Have any of you gotten the email about the beta install yet?

I haven't yet either. Apparently they can only send 10 invites per hour due to Google's restrictions. God knows when we'll get ours.
