On the newly updated Mac OS X Java page. The Java version with the release copy is stated to be 1.4.2.

Didn't Apple promise Java 1.5 with Tiger? 😕

I can't flame you, Chip, cuz ya lost me completely. 😱 Are you saying that yoou want to see new hardware to go along with Tiger? Or are you saying Tiger isn't new enough in comparison to Panther?

This goes to the heart of a thread that I posted long ago about waiting for a Mac mini to use as an upgrade for the rest of my systems.

Ahhh, gotcha. I'm torn about whether I should sell my iBook and get new hardware to anchor down Tiger too.... 🙁

Punani -- hmm....yeah, that is too bad. Maybe soon?

What does the following quote refer to?

"Soon, anyone using a PC can take advantage of the effortlessness of Bonjour for free, too, as Apple will release a Windows version in the first half of 2005."

What is Apple creating for Windows?

Apple already have Rendezvous for Windows. All it does is allow Windows users to use Rendezvous services such as, printing, ftp, web servers etc.

I don't know how can you call a mayor advance in software somo of the features listed, some of them I would be personaly ashamed of showing, eg:

System

About This Mac
View the name of the startup disk in the enhanced About This Mac menu — great if you have multi-drive setups.

Sound good...would be nice to be able to create 2D and 3D apps like you make a web page in dreamweaver 🙄 😉

Has Apple claimed that Tiger has 129 new features for $129? If so, I'd like to review the list.

I too would like to see a list. I wonder where grapher has been for so long. In OS 9 they had a graphing calculator, in OS 10 the calculator also had it hidden - if you showed the package contents and moved the location of the graphing calculator from Resources to Plugins it would be an option under view - learned that from MacWorld. (I got it to work a few minor OS revisions ago but can't get it to work now). Anyway I hope this is an improved version.

Could be, not sure what os you're using, but there is a noticeable difference between Jaguar and Panther in terms of how defined the pinstripes are, so, I think they are fazing them out.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be a dork, but: fazing => phasing

Yeah, I thought so too! Now I can't remember if that was Apple's site, or a rumour site 🙄

Paul Thurrott thinks that Tiger is just a minor OS upgrade

Paul "poche molle" Thurrott can kiss my a$$.

"Ah hahaha. That is funny ... because Tiger is a minor software release, and it's late"

Minor? Yeah, like going from Windows 95 to 98. Not to mention 98 to 98SE. Oh yeah, let's not forget the massive piece of cr@p that was ME.

"Originally expected in late 2004, Apple last year explained that it was slowing the development time of its operating systems. Never let humility get in the way of a good quip, Steve-o."

Oh, well if Paul Thurrott says so, it must be true.

"The basic gist of it, however, is that Tiger is a good upgrade that should be free, because it doesn't offer a lot of major new functionality but rather does include a lot of minor upgrades and fit and finish-type improvements. Like XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), actually."

Oh ok Paul, whatever you say. Did 98 to 98SE offer a lot of major new functionality? Hell, from 98 to ME? System Restore wasn't functionality, it was Microsoft's way of saying "Hey, WindowsME is REALLY BAD. You might want to make sure you leave system restore on because something is bound to happen with this OS. When booting a computer running WindowsME, you might want to pray to any god/gods you believe in."

enjoy

He's followed it up with his "review":
http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/macosx_tiger.asp

I'm not commenting on the article other than to point out his glaring error with regards to the iChat AV minimum specs for hosting a multi-party video chat - he says G5, Apple says dual 1GHz G4 or better.

How is he testing Tiger? He, of all people, can't be a developer, so he must be using a copy of somebody who is. Naughty. He's right about XPSP2 being bigger than Tiger - simply because it fixed so many things that shouldn't have been broken in the first place 😛

Minor? Yeah, like going from Windows

Actually, going from Windows 95 to 98 was a true Microsoft upgrade 🙄 .

The INSTRUCTIONS said the system might crash during installation 😱 , but "keep trying"!!!

It did at least twice when I did it. Imagine getting blue screens of death even before the system is running. 😀

Makes the glitches of the Panther updates look like smooth sailing.

Thurriot doesn't think Spotlight is an major upgrade? That is my main reason for buying Tiger. For those of us with large numbers of files, it will be a really big deal.

"bonjour"??!? 'sup w/ the french naming convention?
they could have called it "connectulator"... 😛

Yeah, well, you know, the French are so gauche...

from Apple's Bonjour page, "Also, innovative cameras may include wireless networking to download pictures, perfect for spycams." 😕 that's really a publicized benefit?? "and for all the pervs thinking about switching, here's yet another reason to come to OSX!"

Oh, come on. You exaggerate. There are all sorts of legitiment uses for spy cams like keeping track of those black helicopters and government troops trying to sneak up close outside my house.

Making Rendezvous/Bonjour open to other platforms is Apple's way of getting more third-party devices (namely printers, but others too) to jump on the band-wagon and support this new technology. That way, the makers of these things aren't going, "Why should we invest in supporting this new standard that only 3% of our potential customers use?" This way, with it working across platform, instant, real plug and play, it's worth it for these guys, cause they get to advertise how easy it is to use their stuff now, too. Same argument kinda goes for Quicktime, iTunes, the iPod... Like how Apple helped develop FireWire, but the only way to get all the DV camera makers, hard drive makers, etc to use it with their products was to make it so cool and great, that they get it out there. Supposedly, somebody could check cause I'm not totally certain, Apple holds the copyright for the actual name "FireWire" and that lil logo, which is why some companies don't call it that, they go by the technical spec. name, IEEE 1394. They don't want to pay Apple to use the name. I might be wrong, I'm up late and rambling, so go easy. I'm gonna go use my spy-cam to watch for black helicopters and secret government agents now. 😉

Oh yeah, even my TiVo uses Rendezvous/Bonjour to connect to my home network. It's clearly listed in the System Information menu. Yada yada, Rendezvous, copyright Apple Computer, Inc. yada yada. Right along with the MPEG licensing and all that stuff.

are these counted as seperate features?

are these two counted as seperate features?

Spotlight Menu Hot Key
Bring up the Spotlight search field at any time with a dedicated keyboard shortcut.

Spotlight Window Hot Key
Bring up the Spotlight search field at any time with a dedicated keyboard shortcut that you can customize.

and these four?

Programmer Base 10 math Calculator
Use different systems like base 8 or hexadecimal with the upgraded calculator.

RPN Calculator
Use the reverse polish method of calculator input.

Scientific Calculator
Find a rich suite of scientific calculations and precision options in the new scientific calculator.

Calculator Widget
Perform basic calculations right from the Dashboard with the Calculator Widget.

seems apple has tryed to embellish that number by making each calulator mode a new 'feature' and making 2 ways to get to spotlight fields seperate 'features'
i didnt even count how many seperate 'features' they got from telling us every place spolight can search seperately and how you can view them.

i also dont like the bonjour name change. Whats gona happen to all the gear out there that says rendezvous?? people are going to get confused now, Apple should have tried to keep it or gone with zero-config.

The biggest reason i will be upgrading is spotlight, searching through all my files will save me tons of time!!

One thing I've learned is that most people use only a small fraction of a system's features. It's just that everyone uses a different set of features. So, while some small calculator thing might sound stupid to anyone who doesn't use a calculator on their computer, I can assure you that it would make a noticeable difference to someone who does.

As well, some features, like Xcode 2, were just listed as a single item, while there are probably many changes from the previous version.

Admit it, like me you were expecting like 10 revolutionary, mind blowing changes, and are disappointed that Tiger won't let you walk on water, and heal lepers 🙂
