Oh well, we men have our dumb bodybuilding competitions, where the winners simultaneously

- look like pillocks (hillocks?)
- make the rest of us males feel unwarrantedly inadequate
- make our girlfriends say to us 'Eeurgh all that muscle is just too much'

Same as Miss Universe, just reversed genders (and less clothing).

Thanks for the criteria. I've seen some mock video of dumb answers in those interviews. Now that I know they are graded I hope the dumb answerers don't get by with beauty alone.

It's a contest that encourages us to respect someone because they are "better looking" than others. It's incredibly shallow and teaches people all over the world that looks are to be worshipped above everything else. I've seen enough of these to know that when any question and answer session comes up you're better off changing the channel than weeping for humanity.

It always seemed a bit arrogant to me to give out the 'Universe' title when only participants from Earth are invited.

Actually, that was pretty much the basis of a Richard Matheson story.

Have to say I don't remember the last time I tuned in to one of these. I was always bored while watching them and was too impatient to sit through the entire thing. I can only stare at beautiful women for so long, hah.

To be fair, although physical beauty is definitely a prerequisite, it's not only about that; if it was, I would agree with you. And I too have heard some off-the-wall/self-contradictory statements during the Q and A sessions, but remember these women are incredibly nervous under all those lights and all that scrutiny while being watched by millions; ask yourself how you would fare under those conditions. I believe only the most seasoned of public speakers, could 'measure up' under those circumstances.

It's about the whole package; talent, poise, grace, character as well as beauty. The judges have had the opportunity to observe these women much longer than the tv audience has, and by the time we get to watch the pageant, they already have picked their top contenders to represent us as our ambassadors for the coming year.

I would hate to live in a society where young, beautiful women, or in fact, anyone, couldn't aspire to be their absolute best.
