So I ran Disk Utility and ran the disk repair on my Western Digital external hard drive. After i did this all my files have dissappeared, but it still shows that all the space that was taken up before is still being occupied. Is there any way i can recover my files? i am getting really distressed about it because i have almost 500 gbs of data that i dont know if i can get back or not. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Basically what has happened is that your catalog file has been corrupted and thus your computed remembers that it has data just not where and what it is. What you should do to be safe is send it for professional data recovery. I really hope you have the data in two places if not let this be a lesson for the future.

Cheers
