Missing images for contacts in Contacts and Messages

A couple of days ago I noticed that the images used for contacts in both Contacts and Messages are gone. iCloud and my other devices (iPhone and iPad) all have them, but not my Mac. Any ideas on this? I turned syncing contacts on and off in iCloud, but that didn't fix them. Catalina 10.15.3.

It turns out the simplest solution worked, albeit a little scary. I logged out of my iCloud account and erased all local data. That's the scary part. Fortunately, after a reboot, I logged back into iCloud and after a while of downloads, all of my contacts and documents redownloaded. Pictures are now back in Contacts and Messages.
