Missing iMessage

I updated to iOS 9 earlier this week, seemingly with no problems. Until I woke up this morning. On my lock screen I could see a message that I received during the night. I opened Messages to read the whole message and send a response, and there is nothing there. There's a time/date stamp from when the message came in, but nothing. I rebooted the phone, still nothing. Any idea what happened here or how I can get it back - and how I can prevent it from happening again?

Was it a regular message or one that had a voice or video message?

Looked like it was a regular message, perhaps with a photo.

Seems like maybe I'm the only one with this issue, maybe it's an isolated incident.

reset network settings/toggle off & on imessage so it reprovisions

did that, thanks. Didn't make the missing message appear, but hopefully it won't happen again.
