My son sent me an e-mail with a pdf attachment which he wanted printed as his printer was u/s. Message arrived with a paperclip to indicate an attachment. However no attachment was visible. He sent it twice to no avail, fortunately I happened to look at my e-mails on my iPhone 5s and there were the messages with pdfs attached. !! I was then able to print them from the iPhone.

My Mac is running Mavericks 10.9.5, the iPhone is on Ios 8.4.1.

Any suggestions why the iMac did not get the attachments? Should I upgrade?

Thanks Brian, yes that works. It never occurred to me to hunt around the menus. I will remember thast trick for the future.

I still don't understand why some attachments appear below the mail message so you can just click to open them, and others don't?

I have had a further "explore" and discovered that at the right hand end of the "Reply, Reply to all. Forward" bar there is an attachment icon which allows you to save the attachment directly without going to the File menu.
