Hello Guys,

I'm trying to airplay a local video file through VLC to an Android TV. The video stream looks great but the subtitles are missing.
Do you know any solution for this?

Mac Mini M1
TV Sony Bravia X85J

The video file is in .mkv format.
Subtitles are in .srt format.

Thank you

This might depend on the AirPlay-app/implementation on your TV. AFAIA there are a few options to address this:

1. You install VLC on your Android TV and create a shared folder on your Mac where your movies and subtitles are saved, and access the media on your Mac from VLC for Android.

2. You use Subler or Handbrake to remux/encode your video and subtitle into a new file and cast then.

3. You try a different video player on your Mac to cast the video like IINA or mpv (just to mention free ones).

nota bene: personally I convert/recode/remux all video material incl. the subtitles - it makes casting much easier for whatever scenario in which you want to cast or replay a video, like e.g. directly from external storage when participating in a conference or meeting.

But for a purely “local“ installation option 1 might be the easiest setup (as long as a decent VLC player can be installed on the Tv set) to solve your problem. YMMV. 🤓

Thank you very much! I appreciate the fast and detailed answer. The first option worked like a charm.
