I figured it'd go a little quicker than 5 hrs with the new macbook i picked up.

it takes about 5 hrs per bluray mkv file. I have a new macbook, 2.4ghz, 4gig ram. From someone knowledged, is this about right?

Is there a quicker way? thx

Encoding high-def H.264 is pretty much the most expensive thing you can do, in terms of processor time. It's a very computationally intensive task, there's not much you can really do to reduce the time involved.

I have a MacBook Pro with similar specs and it took just over 4 hours to do 117 min movie. Sounds right to me (non-HD titles in HandBreak take me 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours with dual pass selected, just an FYI for comparison)

I'll confirm. It takes awhile. Que a number of them up and let it run over night...

new mac pro takes about 70mins average for an 8.5gb HD mkv to mp4
(everything high) - go nuts, best possible etc.

I've converted about 170 HD files so far, without a mac pro..I couldn't have done it..

even with that I backup my movie library everyday..lol....nothing else but just movies...way too much time invested...I cant imagine losing them....

It does take a while.

The likes of a TV show in HD (i.e. Lost) VisualHub converts the 1.07GB file from .mkv to .mp4 in about 90 minutes.

Lost is about 45 minutes long. So, average movie = 2 hours, so (90x2.67)/60 = 4 hours.

Sounds about right.

What are the specs of your macbook pro? what piece of hardware is making your conversions go so quick?
