anyone know the best way to convert hd mkv to a playback format for the iPhone 4 with a .ass subtitle file? (pref hardcoded subs)

I'm looking for windows options (no windows bashing please it's real old 🙄 lol)

Try the Air Video app. No need to convert files. The Air Video app streams video to phone over 3G and/or Wifi. Encodes on the fly. It's the best one for videos out there. Play almost every format I have tried. (m2ts, mkv, avi, mp4, wmv, mpeg, etc..)

Looks amazing over WiFi!

yeh sounds good but I prefer on the device itself 😛 would mean hassling to find a wifi spot or wasting data 😛

I was gonna recommend Air Video as well, lol. It's great with 3G Unrestrictor. Can't help too much with converting it on PC.

Use Handbrake with the Apple TV preset.

Handbrake isn't Mac only. There is a Windows version, I use it everyday.

Not in ass format. You'll have to convert them to .srt and then it will work. No burn in tho as far as I know. Only soft-subs.
