Anyone know of a good free converter to take a .mkv video file to a PS3 compatible file. Sorry for the noob question, but i'm a noob to Mac. I've tried the free "smartconverter" from the MAS but it doesn't work. Please help a new Mac user out!

Thanks a million

rMBP using a NAS box attached to PS3.

just download ps3media server then you will not have to rencode your mkv it will do it on the fly with your mac

That is exactly what I don't want to do. I take my MacBook pro to work with me, so running a server off of it at home is impractical. That is why I have a NAS box and a PS3 so my kids can stream movies off the NAS box to the PS3 while I'm at work. I'm just looking for a simple way to convert mkv files to ps3 compatible files.

Use Handbrake. It will convert mkv's to PS3 compatible mp4/h.264 video files. I do it all the time. I have to select the storage device, then hit the green triangle and tell it to "show all" for some reason, but then they play just fine.
