Ok, seems like Apple have no desire to create an mms app as part of the main software, what's the likelyhood of a 3rd party creating one through the official app store? Would this be technically feasible? I bet this would be one popular app - especially here in Europe.

If you want MMS, Jailbreak is the only way to go. Once you jailbreak install SwirlyMMS via Installer.
