I now believe this is the case. I don't remember rebooting at all this week. I used to reboot every night to clear out the memory on my 3g, but with the new 256mb of ram on the 3GS I haven't felt like I needed to. Last night I was having trouble getting the bluetooth tethering to work so I rebooted the phone. I've only sent a couple texts today since it's been a lazy Saturday and just now noticed it had added the icon. I'm sorry if I got everyone's hopes up, but I'm about 90% sure that this is what happened now. I can't wait to get MMS! If anyone knows of a way to get it without losing VV or other features, feel free to post your tips.

Again, sorry guys. :(

Original Post:
I just went to text my wife that a severe thunderstorm is coming and my iPhone's text screen now has a little camera icon next to the text input! I selected it and it says "Take photo or video" or "Choose existing". I sent an image to test along with a short message and it put them into the convo window with little red circles with exclamation points in them. When I click on them it gives me the option to try sending again.

Does this mean AT&T is about to launch MMS and is readying some sample phones? It's so weird how it just appeared out of nowhere with no syncing. I hope it hasn't been there all along and I'm just stupid. But I don't think it was? I thought all AT&T ones were disabled. I also thought it would take AT&T all summer?

I'm typing this from my 3gs. I took some screenshots that I can post later if I need to.

Okay, this is something NEW that I haven't seen! If you haven't done any hacks, that is.

Okay, this is something NEW that I haven't seen! If you haven't done any hacks, that is.

I've never seen this before and I do text a bit. The camera icon sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm a graphic designer and very aware when things change.

That said I did apply a new carrier file that would ONLY enable tethering. I steered clear of the others because people were having problems with VV, etc. I manually installed it from iTunes. It is NOT the one that you visit the website and it changes your settings for MMS and tethering.

Also...I applied that file last weekend. Haven't seen this until today. I'm about 99.9% sure I would have noticed it by now because I remember looking for the icon and settings last weekend. Also I'm a little annoyed with the reduced size of the text box. The iPhone doesn't count characters but I know that roughly 4.5 lines of text equals the max for one message (I'm stingy with texts flowing over into two messages).

He could post a pic and it still might not have happened :D

He sure is taking awhile to post back, isn't he?

Wait. By AT&T saying they'll launch MMS at the end of summer live concluded MMS is imminent?

Have you rebooted recently. The new carrier file, the "hacked" one will enable the picture icon after a reboot. You can also get a new profile that will not only enable tethering but also make the camera icon appear as well.

At first it sounded like it appeared by AT&T but after reading that you enabled the carrier file via iTunes (i.e. the .ipcc) then it is most likely the carrier file that did it, like most everyone else who is tethering.

I'm a really heavy iPhone user though...I thought I would have noticed something that crazy by now?

As for not responding back quickly...I was typing everything out from my iPhone. I'm back on my MBP now with pics. They don't really prove anything though, except that the photos didn't send.

Sorry if this is just a result of the carrier file but I did it right after I got back from my honeymoon last weekend and I haven't seen this all week. Like I said, I'm pretty particular about the stuff on my phone. My wife would probably agree...a little too particular. I already wish the camera button was at the top because its getting in the way. Typical picky apple person I guess?

Okay, WHAT carrier file do you have. Most of us, the ones who haven't hacked, have 4.0. Do you have 5.0 w/o hacking?

how do you check? is it in settings>general>about>carrier= AT&T 4.0?

thats what mine says and i have tethering but no mms button in messages...

i had the hacked file but then i did a full restore and still had tethering but no mms button...

I think this might all just be from the carrier file if it only shows up after a reboot. Granted, I remember rebooting my iPhone several times last weekend just to do a speed comparison with my 3g (it was about twice as fast) but I can't remember if I've rebooted since then until yesterday night when I know I rebooted. My bluetooth tethering stopped working so I tried rebooting my iPhone.

As for what you requested it says AT&T 5.0:

My MMS works

All I did is go to this web site that entered all the setting for me, and now mms works. Plus i didn't update the carrier file. still 4.0

Updated OP at the top.

that should be a forum rule "pics or it didn't happen."

ill be emailing arn about this, hahaha

Hah, now with the 3GS it will be "vids or it didn't happen."

Congrats!

Thanks! It's been a good time. I knew I married the right woman when she stood in line with me to get an iPhone on our honeymoon. She loves her first gen but hasn't felt compelled to upgrade yet.
