Guys, if you can't get MMS working, listen to me.

I followed all these steps in the other posts and had no luck in enabling the sending of MMS. I had the option to send them, but I couldn't actually get them to go through.

I've called AT&T multiple times bitching at them to enable MMS and everytime I had a rep tell me they will NOT do it. PERIOD.

Okay so... time for Plan B.

Do what these other posts are saying and update your carrier file in iTunes to enable the cellular data network area in Settings.

    I called AT&T's after hours support line about two hours ago and it went like this;

(I'm lieing my ass off the whole time to this guy by the way)

"I recently sold my iPhone 3G and purchased an unlocked SideKick. I'm having trouble sending and recieving picture messages. It gives me an error whenever I try to send one."

He told me how the phone might not be compatible with the AT&T network, but I told him my data was working fine. He assured me that we should be able to get it to work then.

The first process we went through was changing the phone on my account from an iPhone. If you've ever been on the AT&T wireless website, it shows your device. This is what we needed to change he said. He asked me for the IMEI number of my phone.

You guys are going to need to find someone who has a picture-messaging enabled phone (or probably any T-Mobile phone) and get the IMEI number.

This phone ABSOLUTLEY HAS TO be fromT-Mobile so that the IMEI number doesn't match someone else's on AT&T. It will bring up red flags in their system because it will be registered to another account.

I gave him the number and he changed it in their system. Then I told him all the blank fields in the MMS category (even though none of them are blank) under CELLULAR DATA NETWORK in the iPhone settings. He then proceeded to tell me things to fill into those fields. He told me some things that didnt match those below, but I just pretended I was listenting to him and used the ones below.

    APN: wap.cingular
    Username: wap@cingulargprs.com
    Password: CINGULAR1
    MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com
    MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.32

He made me try and send MMS's many times during this phone call and after everytime it didn't work, he would try something different in the system. He also had me restart my phone a couple of times.

He eventually said, I think I finally got it. He sent me a test picture message of a hamburger (looked delicious) and after about an hour of being on the phone with him....

IT WORKS! I can send/recieve picture messages and contacts without any trouble at all.

I really hope this works for you guys. I really think it will. It's a lot of talking and work but if you really want MMS before ****ing LATE SUMMER, give AT&T the middle finger and lie your ass off for about an hour.

NOTE: If he mentions anything about changing your internet plan to the PDA-INTERNET package (same price, just for different phones), tell him that your internet works just fine already and to keep the iPhone data package since you plan on buying the 3GS or something.

Only bad thing about this is that not everyone has a spare T-Mobile phone laying around... T-Mobile doesn't even offer service in Northern Lower Michigan. :(

So basically any T-Mobile phone will do the trick?

What phone is listed under your online AT&T account now the Sidekick or iPhone?

All you need is a friends IMEI number, doesnt have to be YOUR phone.

So the spare phone is only used for the imei number and nothing else correct? I mean, the spare phone does not need to even be on?

    Data Plan

I took my SIM card from my works Blackberry and put it in my iPhone and I was able to send MMS. At&t is lying to us by saying it wont work and need all that time to change everyones account. this is BS

What data plan did you have them to put on? I dont want to get hit with a big data charge for my email.

you dont need a t mobile phone, you just need another non iphone phone

take your sim card out of the iphone, put it into the spare phone

    call att

tell them you sold the iphone and now using the spare phone..tell them you want mms and medianet access as youre currently being told 403 forbidden

they will change whatever they need to change and it should work

then just put sim card back into iphone and enjoy mms

i did this after spending all day doing every other method listed across the threads

The kind of crap you guys will go through to get this enabled borders on comical.

AT&T will have it worked out and there will be a new carrier profile for them to load onto the iPhone probably in a matter of just another month or two.

Or, instead, you can jack with your account, jack with your phone, etc, just to get picture messages working a few weeks early.

    MMS Will work for some

Just got off the phone for second time with AT&T reps. (I called twice to verify they were right). The BOTH let me know as long as the iphone is under a "Family Unlimited Messaging PLan" the will be able to use the feature. The iphone with the "Iphone messaging PLan" will have to be edited manually. WHich they said will take some time....

But it does go to show how badly so many people wanted working MMS. Anyone who ever stated that Apple dropped the ball on this one understated how badly Apple and it's minions screwed up. It's a shame how few people will actually learn anything from this. Personally, I kept my Fuze and got a PAYG sim for it partially for this purpose. Email is NO substitute.

How about instead of waiting "a month or two" I just wait until next year and get the new iPhone with everything working?

Right but AT&T isn't going to release an updated carrier file on iTunes until all the iPhone plans are edited. Just like I have iPhone unlimited text and no opt out message but with no carrier file to unlock mms it's pointless

Sure. Ever try to set it up on a freebie Nokia? Or a WinMo phone? Or pretty much any phone except an iPhone? It's an excuse, not a substitute. And a poor one at that. Give it up already, even Apple admits MMS has a purpose. BTW, the insult says more about you than anyone you think you're addressing with it.

They are already committed to rolling out MMS by the end of the summer, which is only a couple of months away.

So not sure about why you would need to wait till next year. The 3.0 FW is pretty good other than a few minor bugs.

    I know but

Both reps told me that iTunes will update the phone to work. And that the all got memos regarding the issues yesterday on how it will work. She said after iTunes updates the settings people with the family pla will work fine and the others won't. Let's hope they were both right I got the same story twice from reps and tech help at at&t

OK, yesterday, and finally in the late afternoon, I got MMS working on my iPhone. I am using the 3.0 GM, the AT&T Carrier file that is floating around, and the settings for MMS that are also floating around.

    Here is what I did:

    1. I took the sim card out of my iPhone and placed into a spare AT&T phone.

    2. Call AT&T and tell them you have replaced your iPhone with another phone and that you would like to enable to MMS and MediaNet on this phone.

    3. They will tell you they are getting rid of the iPhone data plan and are adding unlimited MediaNet.

    4. They will tell you to test everything out and MMS and MediaNet should work on this substitute phone.

    5. They will ask you to rate them on a scale from one to five (the best) and be sure to give them a five because when you put your sim card back into your iPhone, you will be able to send MMS and surf the net with an unlimited MediaNet plan which is cheaper than the Iphone data plan.

Here's the one thing that irks me though: no voice mail!

So is using the MediaNet package the same thing as using the iPhone data plan to sure the web and buy apps?
