mobile me does not recognize ipad

I noticed that my bookmarks on my ipad were not the same as those in my safari areas of iphone and macbook. When I go into my preferences/mobile me/add device.....I am not able to add the ipad. I hear the little "toot" the computer makes when you can't enter text. Any helpful hints? I know this must be something completely obvious, but can't figure it out.
