I was a user for several years and I dropped the service when it became mobile me. I did not drop it due to the change, but because I was not using it any longer for anything beyond email (it was coincidence that the service changed names). Since that change to mobile me, has there been any major changes that I would want to take advantage of? I have been using google for a few years now (free is nice too) but I like that find iPad/shut down feature if it is lost.

Locate and remote wipe are the bonus that got me signed up....

This is the one reason I've been thinking of signing up. Would be worth it if I ever lost the ipad.

The only thing stopping me from buying it right now is that the locate/remote wipe features are a little flawed. It needs to have a 3G/Edge/similar connection to be located. What if it's in a place without such a connection? What if it runs out of battery? What if they restore it, will that stop it from working?

If only the service was a little better (it's still very good), I would almost certainly buy it.

It does require a bit of vigilance on your part. And yes, it obviously requires a way to communicate remotely, so 3G is pretty much a necessity. But it works well and it provides some comfort that your information will not be compromised.

I love MobileMe myself. I use it to keep my iPad, iPhone, Mac Pro, MacBook all in sync with email, contacts and calendar and it works great.

Ive been a mobile me user since it was .mac. The find my phone is a nice feature but still a little flaky. Ive got 2 iphones signed into 1 account, 1 is my wifes. (not cause im spying on her!) but often I've had the phones with push/find my phone enabled and the site hasnt been able to locate them or get an update.

as I own a mac it makes sense for me to sign up to this account and have everything in sync, calenders, contacts etc. Im not sure the service has the quality to attract non mac users to a subscription? is there anyone who has this ?

    Works with wi-fi, too.

I've been subbed to mobile me for a while (i get them on ebay). I only use the email, sync, backtomymac and remote wipe/find features. I think the price could be cheaper though.
I've tried integrating Google and syncing but it became a mess.

Yes, but that requires it to be both within WiFi range and being able to access the network. If someone has already logged on to a WiFi network with your iPad, it's probably too late to ensure your stuff is secure. 3G is pretty much essential for the service to be effective.
