Missing The main point

Companies are mostly Windows based. Apple needs software that allows us to interface with Power Point etc. AppleWorks is a joke it trys but really can't. Even MicroSoft Office for the mac doesn't completely do the job. I really hate to but just might have to buy a PC to inter act with the companies who make presentaions using Window software.... get on the ball Apple give us something that interfaces.... or PC bound we are!

That is 100% BS.... We have people on BOTH Mac's and peecee's at the company I work for that share powerpoint, word, and excel files daily WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS... We have updated everyone on the Mac to office 2001, and the peecee's are running either office 97 or 2000...

Come on guys. Power vs Power the P4 laptop is faster than the G4 Tibook. You guys asking about weight and screen size of course the dell is heavier it has more connectors and a floppy and the screens are relatively the same size. The dell has higher resolution. For the guy talking about the ibook is faster than the 900 mhz celeron...I have an ibook (with 640 meg ram) and it is much slower than my 800mhz latitude (256 meg ram). I also have a tibook and it runs almost even with the latitude. I am speaking from fact for I own these 3 laptops. This is not speculation or listening to what my friend said, this is from my observation.

What connectors does it have that the TiBook doesn't? I went to Dell's website and didn't really see anything impressive.

Just for reference here are the connectors a TiBook has:
2 USB ports
1 Firewire
1 PCMCIA
1 10/100/1000 Ethernet
1 VGA output
1 S-Video output
1 Modem
1 IR port

I know. It has like 4 monitor ports for all different sizes *snicker snicker* and 2 fans. It is also 2 inches thick. Oh yeah, it has some useless ABD or something ports!

You may think some of these connectors are out dated, but lets face it people still use them. They also add to the overall weight of the laptop. In my view they are needed when we speak of a true desktop replacement. The ports include:
1 IEEE (firewire)
1 serial
1 parallel
infrared
ps/2 port
2 usb
S-video
S/PDIF
2 PC Card
modem
10/100 ethernet

These ports along with the floppy drive attribute to the heavier weight. When speaking of desktop replacement most of these are needed and used in the pc world. The 400 mhz system bus , 64 meg ddr video controller, ddr ram and 1.7 Ghz cpu makes this thing extremely fast. There is no way the current powerbook can compete with this. Apple needs and will update the powerbook soon to compete with laptops from the peecee world. I love my powerbook, but with an unbiased view know it can't compete with the new systems.

Observation...

There are two ways a person can express their opinion that apple should release the new G5 so that the computers would be faster.

1. Make a post that says "I wish the new G5 would come out."

or

2. Make a post that says "I wish the new G5 would come out so apples would be superior to PC machines."

I think both statements convey an almost identical feeling, and both can be made by an avid mac fan, however, from what I have read, those who choose to say number 2 get flamed as if they were anti-mac and PC lovers, while those who say number 1 are ok.

I'm here because I like macs. I like the OS, and I want a TiBook. That will in fact be my next computer purchase. After that, I'll either get an imac or a G4 (G5?) Tower. I'm a convert. That being said, that doesn't mean I wouldn't like the most horsepower for my money.

There is no question about it, I'm buying a TiBook, but I sure wish the new G5 would be in it. (Mainly for the second reason hereinbelow)

As for comparing Macs to PC's, the only time it is relevant is when you are shopping for a computer or when you are arguing with someone who owns the other type.

As for shopping, there is nothing wrong with suggesting that Apple do this or do that to make its products "appear" more competitive (I say appear because I now believe apples aren't merely competitive, they are far superior). If Apple's products "appeared" more competitive, their market share would increase and that would be wonderful for a number of reasons.

As for arguing with someone who uses PC's versus Macs, hoping that Apple does this or does that is also ok because again, it's an appearance issue. I want to rub it in my friends face that my apple is better, and numbers are easier to point to than ease of use and things like that. Those arguments are more difficult to rely upon as a basis for argument because they require actual hands on experience, and for some PC users, that isn't going to happen (at least not willingly). [Oh, and if it does happen, and you are in an argument, they aren't going to concede that the apple is better... remember, it's an argument].

Note: There is one other group of people out there who might clamor for more power or different chips, and they are the power users. From what I've read, most power users want the maximum horsepower to run their design, video and audio applications. As for them, I haven't a clue, so I'll just keep my mouth shut.

All that being said, and after having read this thread, I think the flaming of vilacr and fragiledreams may be without merit. It sounds to me like they are both macophiles, but for whatever reason chose to express their wish for faster/badder/meaner macs in the manner described in number 2 (see above.)

--- Oh, they had a neat photoshop thing on techtv this morning and it was all done on a G4 tower (I think the OS was not OSX, but I wasn't sure). It looked cool though. Unfortunately, they didn't make a point of saying it was on the mac and not the pc, but I could tell.

I wasn't aware anyone was "flaming" vilacr here.

I was just asking for more information to clarify the initial post.

To reply to your post, I find myself wanting G5s for both reasons. I want the fastest Mac available to do video editing, graphic design and web design. I also want to be able to tell PC users how much better the Mac is than their Wintels.
I'm in the position of fighting to keep the Macs in our lab here. Our director only uses PCs and says that Macs are going to be obsolete and go out of business and that we should do all of our development on PCs. I need cold hard facts to persuade her that Macs are the best machine for the job. "Ease of use" is a concept she has never heard and doesn't believe in (who would after using PCs all their lives?). She looks at: 1)price, 2)speed and 3)what everyone else is using. Since the third option is already blatantly in favor of PCs, I have to battle against the first two. I can tell her that Macs are less expensive in the long run, since they last longer and require less tech support than the PCs. Speed these days is more difficult to argue. She will look at the processor speed and that's that. I need something from Apple that will blow her away and shut her up. Plan and simple.

it's clobberin time...

Here is one resource from Apple that you can beat her over the head with...

http://www.apple.com/g4/myth/

As for Apple going out of business... you can point out that the peecee world has been saying that since the late 80's and Apple is still in business, and going strong. Another point would be the fact that Apple is opening up retail locations while other computer makers are closing them. Apple is continuing with innovations, where the peecee world is using the same old beige (or black) box that has been around since the early 80's. Peecee companies are also copying Apple designs, and have been for several years. How many other computers had 12Mb USB and FireWire before Apple came out with both standard??? Both m$ and Sony are supporting FireWire in the latest operating systems, as well as hardware (Sony). As of yet, m$ has not pulled support for the Mac OS from it's lineup, it even 'rushed' to put out a new version of orfice for OS X. Tons of software companies either support OSX, or will very shortly.

Apple has proven itself to be here for the long haul (considering how long they have been in business, and how many times peecee people have claimed they were going out of business).

Apple STILL dominates the design field, and has a strong foothold in the education market. Combine that with how many times you have seen Apple products on tv, and in movies are a decent indication (at least for me) that they are here to stay.

You can also point out that Apple systems from all the way back in 1994 are able to run the current OS (9.1), how many peecee's from that year can run windows 2000??

I am on a Pentium 166, there is a Pentium 150 down the hall, and several 486's downstairs. You gotta love government for its efficiency.

that's why i hardly visit these retarded boards.

everything you said is true. i only glance these boards every now and then, since i realized how closed-minded many of the people are here. feel free to flame, i never read them.

anyway i'm having a hell of a time finding a mysql client for the mac that doesn't suck in a major way. luckily i'm not afraid of pcs and i have one on my desk.. next to my mac.

a) I am fully aware of the fact that in the same MHZ a P4 is slower than a P3, like a P3 is slower than a G4.... However we are talking about nearly a 3x Mhz difference (667 vs 1700) and 3x bus difference (133mhz vs 400mhz) as well as 2x 2nd level cache difference (512 vs 256).... As a result I don't just think... I am 10000% sure that the P4 is faster! You seem to forget something..... Here I am not talking about design, innovation, 1 inch thick, apple logo in the machine or whatever.... I am talking about PURE SPEED.....

b) Why do you mention Celeron? Celeron is the slowest CPU out there, so what is the point mentioning it.... Because it is slower than a G3? Big deal....

c) The new P4 2,2 competes prety well with the high end athlon and probably beats it in some tasks....0.13-micron technology, 512 cache, e.t.c. You guys have to stop thinking so stupid and write things like Inel sucks or AMD is the only or whatever... where the F@@k do you make these conclusions from....

d) Never said that G4 as a proccessor or the dual Ghz power mac suck in any way. It is the fact that they are not cutting edge any more and certainly not prformance leaders. Nothing more, nothing less....

Finaly... try to be less This "sucks", that "beats the hell out of..." e.t.c We try to communicate here, we are not enemies.

Finaly, NOW I finaly understand why all my postgraduate marketing books have at least 4-5 pages each about Apple & Brand loyalty.... It seems like Jobs': "Burns CD, burns DVDs, Burns Pentiums" approach pays back realy well !!! Shame...

Which version of windblowz are they running???? How much hair have you pulled out while waiting for them to do normal tasks???

don't buy one. just look at what is going on in that side of the world. macheads tend to keep themselves cornered in their own world unaware of technology in other places. yes.. the technology may not work correctly together, but... it is there and i wish i could put it to use in my powerbook.

Mac worki with Widows

Well just for your info i do HAVE all the Microsoft mac Software and yes I can open write print etc for just about anything. I do love my Mac........BUT the company just put up a online web based tracking system and the programs (outside company) used a FX plug in. I called the software manufacture and asked if they had a plug in for the Mac "answer: mac has less than 5% market share and at this time we don't see the nedd, maybe if Mac's growth is good this year we might hhave to design the Mac version of the plug in" So there you go guys---Microsoft strikes again... I have tried everything. Download the plug and and no way it works with a apple. So because of this one plug in and the fact that I am one of 58 people who have to use the system and.....the only one with a Mac. you guessed it they won't change to another plug in.......so I am SOL...... might just have to buy a PC.....ouch! I started on a Lisa "which I still own and many other since then, so that might give how loyal I have been to Mac. As long as programers use those types of Plug In's financed by MMicrosoft we are going to be inched out.. a little at a time. There you have it! Now what...
If anyone can make this work with a Mac let me know...Download the WebBarFX plug-in, please make sure the file is downloaded with a DLL extension
WebBarFX 32Bits plug-in (Windows95 and Windows NT). [Approx. 25K]
Copy the plug-in to the <Netscape>/Program/plugins directory.
Close all the Netscape windows.

i agree with apple going strong...i just wish the wall street journal and other financial periodicals would stop being so gloomy about apple...and people who buy stock seem to also really be down on apple since the original imac fervor died down, but apple is just retooling right now and planning for the long term...as long as we are here apple can stay in business...maybe they will never grow any bigger, but as long as they have good stuff for us five percent, that's fine with me
