eWeek reports that Apple is extending into mobile devices with its Quicktime software.

Apple Computer Inc. is reportedly preparing to extend the reach of its QuickTime multimedia software to mobile devices. According to sources, the company this month is expected to wrap up development on QuickTime 6.3, code-named "Sidecar."

Some support of such devices was first announced last year by Apple. eWeek details other improvements coming with Quicktime 6.3, including improved support for iApps, MIDI and streaming.

In potentially related info, one previous unconfirmed rumor claimed that Apple was working with Ericsson.

Might this, perhaps be related in any way to the CGI interface Apple uses for QT's current downloads section? ;-)

......w-sidecar.apple.com, etc

It's about time

Apple should have had something ready to run a while back.
I would love to see QT in Palm OS as well as the Phone OSes.
Heck make it for the wincrap phone OSes so Apple has the presence.

I remember reading on here that there was some reason why the P800 didn't work with iSync. But, it just seems wierd all these rumors of working with Ericsson and the one true PDA replacement phone that the company (well, SonyEricsson) comes out with isn't even compatible with iCal, Address Book and iSync. At least my T68 is :D

Sounds pretty nifty...
Why do I think that the flood of iPads and Newton 2 speculation is gonna come pouring down.....?

and isnt a newer Quicktime supposed to add streaming? this could be useful and potentally groundbreaking feature for phones and PDAs....

I definitely believe that Apple is working closely with Ericsson. Look at the iSync supported phones.....all Ericsson (at least in version 1.0). Me thinks Apple has something up their sleeves. :)

But then again, when haven't they? :)

sidecar.apple.com has been around for years. You used to be able to log in and order Apple promotional materials for free. I have a big box of iMac 29.95 banners, commercials on DAT, and even sealed packs of G3 pamphlets. That didn't last too long though. Now it looks like it's their misc crap server. There's a few things that run off of it if you look around their site.

BTW QT 7.0 better include a viewer that isn't the worst in the industry. Quicktime Player is a pretty MoviePlayer and MP was horrible. It's time to just rewrite the app.

did't a few years back, don't remember when, anyways at a macworld they had some one from sonyericson, talk about the bluetooth phones. And if i remember correctly he said apple and sonyericson are working closely. Which is what started the Iphone rumors.

Im probly all wrong about this.

Have you ever used Realplayer?

QT isn't the worst in the industry :)

Windows Media Player 8 is surely the worst in the industry. Its just a total UI abomination. The Mac version (WMP7?) is not exactly great either.

It all seems pretty logical. SonyEriccson, mobile Quicktime, your mom.

And Bob's your uncle.

My brother works for T-Mobile and some of his customers (even him) switched from Mac to PC because the phones' extra features require PCs to work. What's worse is he has the newest Nokia phone (the one with the commercial with the guy who has that hedgehog crawl up his leg.. it has a camera and what not on it) but yeah that uses REALPLAYER as its standard movie viewer.. UGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! someone please come pick me up off the ground.

the reverse happend to my collegue

My collegue, who hates mac, finally decided to get a Mac. He didnt realize the usefulness of Mac till he got a Tungsten T and T68i. He quickly found out that there is only working sync solution via bluetooh available in the market, and its on Mac. So this Quicktime newa is indeed great. More switchers.

i agree wholeheartedly. it isn't the interface front that is bothersome and quicktime pro's features are quite good for 29.95 in my opinion.

my issue with quicktime comes from it's foundations: it's slow like nothing else on my mac (except the apps that use it excluseively (iphoto, itunes)). it crashes like nothing else on my mac. it is really legacy software that makes up a major part of what apple totes as it's best features of OS X.

Quicktime on PC is fine, it's just another app. QT on mac however is important, it's a framework that so many things rely on.

Come on apple, pick up the ball!

I hope this becomes available for most phones, and not just Sony Ericsson.

I have an Audiovox CDM-9500 which is an excellent phone and has a MUCH better (bigger, brighter, more colors) screen than the T68. I can already stream video using Verizon's 144Kbps data service, but being able to use Quicktime and not just the stuff Verizon has (an app to connect to Logitech webcams, stand-up comedy app).

i don't know anything about american phones. the original article way back when was saying that Apple was partnering with DoCoMo in Japan for it's iMODE service. (this is also something of an online content standard in parts of europe i believe)

anyway, from using DoCoMo's FOMA (3G) phones they run what they call 'i-appli' they are just mini JAR java packages.

i can't imagine this is the market apple is going after. they are interested in having phones' software incorporating QT from the factory. we are not near a stage where you can choose your media player on your phone.

please someone please correct me, but just because your phone is palm-based doesn't mean apple is looking to make QT palm software... atleast not the downloadable exchangeable kind...

Might this mean we can transfer all our iPhoto stuff onto the iPod, dock it to our TV/stereo, and have it also play music from the iTunes library?

I'm surprised that no-one's mentioned the possibility of movies on some new iPod device.

My father wants to buy a new plasma widescreen TV (personally that's a little steep for me). If he could plug an existing iPod or similar in to a dock and get high resolution shots on his screen he would buy one. Ooops, no he'd need iPhoto for Windows too or a connection for Adobe... damn.

i think your post is nothing but dreams, sorry. there is *hope* for a new device that might be able to *ahem* 'communicate' but don't get to thinking current iPod's will be doing video or pictures.

I have thought about this too... I think this is another reason for soooo many connector pins on the bottom...
