MobileMe beginning to morph into iCloud?

When setting up a MobileMe account in iOS 4, has anyone noticed the create a free Apple ID option now (or did I not notice that before)? Also, if I sign in with my regular Apple ID, it tries to set me up with... something. Haven't had a chance to follow through with the process.

Actually, more importantly, I'm wondering if I can now sign up for iCloud/MobileMe and associate my non-me.com Apple ID with a me.com email address.
