MobileMe Calendar Upgrade and iOS 3.x

Does anyone have any experience or tips with using the new MobileMe calendars with older iPhones/iPods that can not be upgraded to iOS4?

If iOS4 is required for MobileMe syncing, has anyone had any luck using iTunes instead of MobileMe to sync iCal data with the new calendars on the older devices?
