MobileMe Free Trial with iPhone 3G purchase?

Can I be a complete n00b and ask what is the fuss with this mobileME? Is it a service like gmail etc or does it offer anything more exciting? thanks!

I just signed-up for 60 day .mac account. Everything looks great and I know MobileMe will be even better! However, the biggest drawback for me is that I cannot "spoof" my outgoing email to be from (XXXX@gmail.com) my Gmail address.

If only Apple could add this. It's difficult to switch from an email address you've used for years. I don't think a lot of people want the hassle.
