I'm thinking of asking for a refund if they go free this year. MobileMe has become a running joke in my family because I mention every once in a while that something about MobileMe isn't working for me, and my family can't understand why I don't use Gmail. My excuse is lame. I stubbornly wanted to keep the same e-mail address I've had since December 2000, when I signed up with iTools.
Apple really struggles in the way they approach Internet services, and their support is terrible for MobileMe. Pretty much every time I have had an e-mail interaction with MobileMe or iTunes support, they don't read or understand the e-mail the first time.
Having said that, my MobileMe e-mail today is OK, knock on wood.
For me it's simple, here are the kinds of things no one else offers:
ToDo list syncing, which gCal *still* doesn't do.
FindMyiPhone because i have a 3GS.
Syncing my preferences across all my machines.
Syncing my keychains across all my machines.
Syncing my Safari bookmarks across all my devices.
A public folder online where people can put files ala DropBox, without being forced to sign up for a DropBox account.
AddressBook syncing without messing up my custom fields.
All of those are absolutely essential to me.
There are even more that aren't quite so essential but you get the idea ..
The only thing missing for me from the MobileMe package is speed of access. Otherwise i can't think of a single thing MobileMe doesn't do. I think it's genius, i just wish it was bulletproof.
Fundamentally though, my problem with free services like those offered by google is conceptual. If you're not paying for it then you're not the customer - you're the product being sold.
