this might be OT, but the castle thing made me think of a few other points too. Apologies in advance.

1. MobileMe should NOT be rebranded. They can "add cloud castle level security" whatever, but keep it simple. MobileMe has great recognition (if a subpar rep, but see AppleTV) attached to it.

2. MobileMe should be worth the money. It is currently a ripoff when so much else is free. Apple should give a small wifi dropbox style sync for free among apple products (like dropbox) under the MobileMe name, and a wifi sync for iphone (free). This is not "entitlement", this is a basic functionality in 2011.

Not that anyone from apple is going to read this but whatever

If "A mans Home is his castle" then maybe what they are talking about is a service that upgrades the users home folder to a "Castle" which would be stored and syncing to the Cloud and across all your devices.

In which case in would be better if it wasn't linked to MobileMe at all.

If MobileMe is your public face then iCloud is your private stuff.
Yes security relying on obscurity is no security at all, but that doesn't mean that obscurity isn't a valid early security measure. So keeping your iCloud user name separate is important.

After all your email address is out there in public, so you don't want that tied to your private storehouse do you.

Also If someone has a different public face ie. their own domain then the syncing service could still be useful to them.

I think this might add to MobileMe becoming free, but reduced in size. With a set of Paid upgrade that the user can select to suit. So if you just want live access to itunes library then you can have just that. Want to sync your home folder then that is a bit more. It allows for better targetting of the value.

IF this system is about Home folder syncing then I hope it allows for control of which info is in which home folder. So that I could have a User Profiles for various places like Work and Home. If I bookmark something at work i want to be able to see that at home but not the other way around.

.mac then mobile me, now castle.
Change, again. ugh. Let's hope it's free this time!

Steve will go on and on about how revolutionary it is, then inform us its only $29.00 per month on a one year contract.

First my address was @mac.com, then @me.com,

I'm not about to sign up for @screwed.com

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8H7 Safari/6533.18.5)

Similar to the message that "@aol.com" sent in the 90s? Hey, I purchased aol, or prodigy, or compuserve. Just bc we have a plethora of choices of free services, it doesn't mean that someone who pays for something is obnoxious.

What's with all the names changes?

iTools -> .Mac -> MobileMe -> iCloud

It's not the name that's hindering Apple's online efforts, it's the pricing, features and reliability.

I just hope they make iDisk as good or better as DropBox. iDisk in its current iteration is just awful.

I'm with you. iDisk is a clunker and I never use it. Apple would be smart to just buy DropBox. It's perfect.

According to some sources within Apple, MobileMe will be free and for individuals to use, and Castle, now iCloud, will be "the MobileMe for companies". Im not 100% sure this is right, but a guy I know has been right before, and he has some kind of connection within Apple.
iCloud for businesses would make a lot of sense, because Apple really wants to make iOS more "corporate". Also the big datacenter Apple built is something that could serve iCloud for small and medium businesses, leaving the new Mac Pro Stackable for the bigger businesses and corporations.

Do you ever question your life
Do you ever wonder why
Do you ever see in your dreams
All the castles in the sky :)

You do realise the negative connotation of those lyrics right ? Anyone thinking "Castle in the sky!" is positive and cute needs to wake up to what was actually meant by the metaphor.

Next you guys will be telling us how great it is for Apple to build houses on sand.

Yup! And if this new Castle thing really is a new .mac or MobileMe service, then it's really a castle in the sky. Why all that name change? I mean, a name doesn't define the quality of a service.

The *only* thing I care about is whether or not it's all fully functional on Snow Leopard....from what I've seen of Lion so far, do not want :-(

Apple's plan with iCloud -- My GUESS.

I really don't know anything....but....

I think that Apple MAY start selling computers (in what ever form they come) with subscriptions to "iCloud". They can save costs by throwing in a small SSD with enough space for iOS (which will be on all Apple machines by default) and letting users subscribe to the iCloud for space.

All at an amazing discount, much like the iPhone. Millions of users are doing this with their iPhones, not realizing (really) how much their iPhone is costing them over time. $199 just sounds like a great price. Imagine that, but it's an iMac for only $399 and $14.99 for an iCloud account. If you don't want an iCloud account, you pay regular price. This model works well for the iPhone.

You can always get local space, by buying your own hard drive and adding it.

I really don't know, but this idea came to me. I'm interested in seeing how MobileMe is going to change this year and if Apple comes up with something like this.

Go Apple!

My Home is My Castle

I'm betting that the "Castle" will be a remote site backup of my home folder. I'd pay for that service. No backup is complete without an off-site segment. Take a look at all the destruction of the past week in the South. I wonder how many lost their data, music, video and photos to the storm without an off-site back-up.

How do you open localized strings?

Using qlmanage -p or vim, you can see the contents, but they look compiled.

But anyway to view the files properly?

They are binary plists. Anything that can open a binary plist can read the file, as is shown in the screen shot, OmniOutliner.

iDisk works fine for me and has better integration than Dropbox.

How is iDisk better integrated than DropBox? I have DropBox running on my desktop where it looks like any other folder. I can open that folder and drag things to and from it. I have DropBox running on my iPad and iPhone too, and all three devices sync automatically. I use 1Password on all three devices and my data file resides on DropBox, so 1Password syncs to all devices automatically. And, there's a web interface for DropBox, so I can get to it from any computer. So what's better on iDisk?

Guessing that MobileMe (as it is now) will go free, and then the premium service will allow backup and access to all your system. $100 a year for that would definitely be worth it.

But what about the $107 I just paid for MobileMe LAST WEEK???

Yeah, iDisk doesn't even compare to DropBox. You get more storage, but that's about it.

Hey I'm MobileMe.

And I'm Google's Services.

Hey, Google! Hear the good news? iCloud is here. And it's not going to have any of the problems MobileMe had.

I feel I've heard this before...

will icloud and google OS set high speed internet back?

so it seem that everybody is jumping on this cloud bandwagon. just wondering if having web based operating systems and file storage will slow down broadband internet speed?

is that a concern? honestly i'd rather have faster internet, if that's the choice.

could somebody tell me more about this?

thanks.

Using more bandwidth will... use more bandwidth.

Am I going to have .mac, .me and .icloud email addresses now?

That's what I'm trying to figure out... my machine will not upgrade to Lion so therefore I cannot have iCloud????? It seemed to say that all MobileMe accounts would automagically convert but how can it if I can't use it??? Does that mean I'm stuck and without my .mac address??? Totally confused...
