so expensive! i could buy an ipad and mpbr for that price

Shockingly you could buy a retina MBP and a Microsoft Surface Pro with 128gb SSD, 8gb ram and support for wacom pen/digitiser for the same price.

This one is just too much $kerching

Somehow I don't think they'll be making too many of them.

----------

Which artist uses a phone for drawing?

You need to see some of the amazing work of Sam Spratt.

----------

I suppose you are not an artist, achitect, industrial designer and so on.

They would be better off buying a 24" Cintiq

Some people complain about price here but lets put it on the paper

Modbook = $3,499

Macbook pro 13" = $1,699.00
Wacoom Cintix 12" = $980

Total = $2,679.00

Difference 3499-2679= $820

So $820 difference is for following things:

Modbook Build Kit

Modbok Pro Protection Plan

- One-year manufacturer’s limited hardware warranty on Modbook Pro components
- One-year warranty-equivalent service plan on MacBook Pro base system

I don't think they have to high margine when you compare all this plus labor work to make damn thing and to add cost of transport.

So price is totally in scale with price if you buy Macbook + Wacoom
Only thing is that space wise you will need way more space to carry both Mac and Wacoom.

This combo 2 in 1 is interesting... Maybe if they could dump price for lets say 100bucks that would be great...

Except this isn't converging a toaster with a fridge. This is giving people who want to use a stylus on a full PC powered tablet device the option to do so.

These aren't disparate things. They fit quite well together.

A tablet device? Weighing in at 5.5 pounds?

I can slap a Ferrari badge on a Scania lorry, but it won't win Le Mans 24...

I could slap a herp-a-derp on a darp-a-durr and you still wouldn't get that these are two entirely separate products for two entirely separate markets, and can't be directly compared to one another.

The iPad is a $500 entertainment/light productivity device. This thing is a Macbook Pro modded with a Wacom digitizer for artists and professionals. No, it won't sell like the iPad, or have the same mass market appeal. But for $3500, it's not supposed to.

Odd comments. This isn't supposed to replace your ipad people. This is for artists who use Wacom drawing tablets. A different market.

Although if someone would just invent a half decent stylist for the Ipad, we might be able to work around this for much cheaper. :)

Don't worry most of the commenters on internet forums can't turn on their brains. This products is awesome for a very little market as designer who lives with their cintiq.

That's not really not accurate pricing difference as you are not getting a Cintiq 12" which would be an 'extra' screen.

So the difference is actually $1800 for those features you describe.

+ you have to remove the cost of the components they take out of the macbook pro (aluminium casing, screen etc..) as you do not get to keep these, so they must be offset against the components in the modbook pro, and so the difference rises $2000 or more for the conversion.

And the day I or anyone should be grateful for a 1 year warranty on a $3500 system is the day the sun turns cold.

Even the Cintiq's come with a 3 year warranty as standard.

Going forward into a world of touch screen laptops and computers in the next wave of windows machines, and possibly mac's if the windows model proves to be successful, where the base price for much the same is less than half the price of the modbook pro, means it has a serious up hill struggle even if it was priced closer to the rMBP.

For the wealthy artist or those with wealthy patronage.:D A Wacom Cintiq can be had for under $800. For the starving artist type, there's a $300 alternative that only works with Windows. Of course, with both, computer not included.

Excuse me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard. I want this Modbook Pro. Yer iPadders can play around with yer toys.;) Compare to this beast the iPad is a toy. It's akin to comparing a Sierra/Silverado to a Topkick/Kodiak. This thing ain't for playing angry birds, unless you're a big wig executive who has a Mac Pro just for screen savers while the engineers working for you have to jury rig a Mac Mini server farm.:D But I digress...

I think it's great that they're finally releasing this thing - it's been what, 6+ years? - and it's great that they've upped the specs, tho I think people waiting for it would agree they'd rather actually get one sometime soon than anything else ;)

Not for me, but then it's not my industry. Should be cool when it launches.

I guess this is a different company, after a buyout. The original intention for the Modbook pro was multitouch plus wacom pen.

For any artist who wants to zoom in/out, that will be a huge drawback. So this ends up being a gimped tablet and a amputated laptop.

I'll wait until they have a good offering or Apple and Wacom finally partner to make a coherent product.

I stopped reading after $3,500. Da f! And people complain about a $329 price...! 3,500 is ridiculous!

I've considered one of these in the past. My primary concern was quality control and poor warranty service if anything does go wrong. That's $2500 and it still needs an actual computer. Personally I prefer that. For lighter sketching an ipad would work too. It has some limitations, but I expect that will improve.

This is extremely expensive and all, however I tend to think that with the new Macbooks, so the entire thing is rather relative.
