I have an iPod (MA002LL) which has been in use for 20 years, permanently on a clock radio dock.
This still works great.

I have not added any playlists to it since using my G5 (about 15 years ago).
Do you think it would be wise to try and write new files after such a long time…?

Also will modern purchases from iTunes and recent CD imports be compatible with an old device?

If you still have the same iTunes library you can keep syncing it, otherwise syncing with a new library will remove the stuff from the old library. Do note that those iPods have HDDs in them and they can fail, if that's what you're asking about.

They're the same audio file format they were when you bought the iPod new, not much has changed in the audio encoding scene (at least nothing Apple supports).

Yeah that was my thinking…no writes for over a decade…. 😬
Re-writing may be too much for an old drive, and it works fine at the moment to play back.
