Just updated to ios 14 on the iPhone and now when connecting to 2018 iMac 27" SSD running Mojave 10.14.6, I get this notification:
A software update is required to connect to iPhone. There are the usual buttons Learn More, Not Now, and Install. My question is, what is Apple trying to install? Are they trying to update me to Catalina? Tried all the usual, restart iPhone & iMac.

That's good to know that it is not trying to update my MacOSX.
I was afraid of this and haven't done it, but now have after seeing this thread.

Thanks!!!

I also was very wary of this and cancelled the installation immediately. I did some research and quickly found an Apple support document that verified its legitimacy.

I don't know what it's doing but it's probably updating something inside iTunes to allow it to update/sync the iPhone/iPad/etc. to iOS/iPadOS 14 as rockisle mentions.

When I click the "Install" button to my relief it was a small download (less than 20MB). I was ready to abort again or disconnect the Ethernet cable if it started downloading Catalina.

I see a lot of friends here..all terrified like me to update to Catalina.
This is why I cannot update to iOS 14 using Configurator, but I wasn't offered the update and get an error
I have iTunes 12.9.5, which version do you have?

My current configuration is:
  • Mac mini 2018 running Mojave 10.14.6 (18G6020)
  • iTunes 12.9.5.5
  • iPhone XS with iOS 14.0
  • iPad mini 4th generation with iPadOS 14.0
I have an external Catalina boot drive for experimenting. I have never found any compelling reason to upgrade my primary/internal boot drive to Catalina and based on many threads on this site, it appears I spared myself 11+ months of misery.

In a month or two when Big Sur comes out, I will consider upgrading to macOS 11 thereby skipping Catalina completely. As long as I own this Mac mini 2018, I will always have a Mojave boot drive available.

Also, I stayed with iOS/iPadOS 12.4.x on my iDevices until mid-August 2020. I ran iOS 13 for less than a month.

I have a Macbook pro and a Macbook air both running Mojave and iTunes 12.6.5.3 . I also got the message but I knew what it was about so I went ahead. No problems there.
Funny thing though when I booted the air from an external ssd running the Big Sur beta and iTunes 12.9.5.5 it did not require the update.

Thank you all it works a treat. I was concerned prior to learning of your experiences. Got to love this forum :)

Here's a question. I have an older phone that I upgraded to ios14 as a trial; our other two phones (the ones we mostly use) are still on ios13. If we do this upgrade so that iTunes can see the ios14 phone, will I lose the ability to synch my phones with the older operating system?

I get the same update software message when I connect my iPhone SE/iOS 14.0.1. But when I try to download the update it starts then after a minute or so I get this error.
"Can't download the software because of a network problem"

I have been trying it for the past three days thinking it may be an issue on Apples end but I'm still getting it. I know it's not an issue with my LAN because everything is working fine.

Any ideas?

hey man, I had the exact same problem. I just restarted my mac and refreshed everything and tried again. It worked to my surprise, maybe I was just lucky or something but try it.

There was an update for the OS and Safari that wasn't installed. When I checked a couple of days ago everything was up to date. So it appears that it was a recent update. After I installed that update it work.

I am running OS X 10.12.6 (Sierra) on my loaded 2012 MacMini, and after getting the same "software upgrade" message, it was the same fix for me. A simple patch downloaded from Apple fixed the issue. I can now control my backups, as well as choose music and photo files to be copied to my iPhones via iTunes, once again!

But then restart computer.

Reiterating, to solve the problem:
in Mojave and can't mount iPhone iOS14
and get error "Can't download the software because of a network problem"

I had to:
Restart in Safe Mode (shift down).
Turn off VPN.
Unplug and Restart iPhone and reconnect it.

Then the software did download and install.

But then again finally Restart.

And iPhone did show in iTunes!
