Moment Debuts New 14mm Fisheye Lens for iPhone, Promises Crisper Ultra Wide-Angle Shots

Moment, known for both its Pro Camera app and its line of professional lenses for the iPhone, today debuted its latest lens offering, the Moment Fisheye 14mm Lens.

Priced at $119.99 (though available at a discount for the first 48 hours), the Moment Fisheye Lens works with Apple's new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and older iPhones using one of Moment's iPhone photo cases.

While Apple's newest iPhones have an ultra wide-angle camera lens with a 13mm focal length and a 120 degree field of view, it's lacking compared to the wide-angle camera because of its higher aperture, lack of optical image stabilization, and smaller sensor.

The Moment Fisheye Lens transforms the higher-quality wide-angle camera in the newest iPhones into an ultra wide-angle lens, offering up the same general capabilities but able to take advantage of the better camera technology in the wide-angle lens.

According to Moment, the Fisheye lens also offers a 170 degree field of view, which is 30 percent wider than the ultra-wide angle lens, so it gets even more in the frame. There is distortion with a Fisheye lens, of course, but the Pro Camera app for iOS is gaining a new distortion correction option to go along with the new lens.

The app will feature a slider that will correct the bend in the image, allowing for a super wide-angle photo with less distortion. The lens screws right on to the Moment iPhone case, making it easy to attach, detach, and swap out with other lenses.

The Moment Fisheye Lens features a bi-aspherical design, which Moment says brings edge-to-edge clarity, taking advantage of 15 percent more of the image sensor than the company's previous Fisheye lens.

Because it can use the better camera in the iPhone, it's sharper than the built-in ultra wide-angle camera, especially in lower lighting conditions, and it works with Night Mode.

The new Moment Fisheye 14mm Lens can be purchased from the Moment website. For the first 48 hours after launch, it will be available for $90, and after that, it will be priced at $120.

I wish there was a way to disable OIS in software to take advantage of these lens cases for video (and stabilize in post).

I picked up a Nomad leather case for Moment lenses, and also the 18mm V2 and 58mm V2 Moment lenses, for my iPhone XS. They work so much better than Olloclip and other such products. Don’t expect corner to corner sharpness like with a $1000 camera lens, but overall the quality is pretty good! I bought my lenses and case secondhand, they’re a bit pricey brand new.

I have been using Olloclip lenses for years, and hating it. They keep changing their adapters and it winds up being a waste of money if you upgrade your iPhone annually. I’d been considering upgrading to the Moment lenses this year but was waiting to see what lenses the iPhone Pro came with. I really like this new ultra wide angle lens that Moment has just come out with, it looks beautiful. But Apple’s new ultra wide angle that comes built-in is so good for a default lens, and I am having so much fun using it, I am wondering how much use I will get out of an additional wide angle that requires a special case and screwing it on and off. The value prop for Moment lenses was extremely strong with previous iPhones, but it becomes even more niche with the new iPhone Pro.

I might pick one up if I can find a professional use for it. But for my basic shooting the new default cameras are just so easy and good.

Why would you want to disable OIS? How does that prevent you from taking advantage of the (Moment?) lens cases for video shooting?

One advantage of the Moment wide lens over the new wide lenses on the iPhone 11 is that you can shoot raw with the Moment lens.

But yes - it’s far more convenient not having to carry around an accessory lens and attach it to your phone to use.

You don't need Moment lens' to shoot in Raw format. Even with the Moment app you can use the native iPhone lens and still shoot in raw. I believe there are other apps that can also shoot in Raw format.

I didn’t think the iPhone 11 ultrawide lens could shoot raw, only the normal wide lens. The ProCam makers stated this in one of their updates. They also mentioned that the built in ultrawide lens is fixed focus.

I know for certain the built-in ultrawide lens doesn’t work with Night Mode or Deep Fusion, but a Moment 18mm does of course work in those cases.

Using Moment's cases, it'll fit both lenses on an X-series phone, or both lenses along the edge on an 11 Pro.

It depends on your use case. I found their previous Wide Angle to be pretty amazing.

As an example with their Telephoto on my XS, I could use it on my XS's telephoto for 4X zoom, or on the main lens for 2X with the better sensor.

That's the advantage of Moment over Olloclip. The lenses are universal and just require a case (which honestly, they're pretty nice cases). And it's only a 45 degree twist, not screwing (just putting that out there).

Now I don't have the new 14mm in hand, but my email is telling me 30% wider without distortion over the 11 Pro's Wide.

A plethora, actually. Some are fantastic, some... not so much. Moment's app falls pretty close to the top for me IMO.

a $120 wide angle lens is considered junk for a DSLR. So if this thing is better than the built in iPhone wide angle lens, what does that mean?
