Moment today added to its existing line of MagSafe-compatible mounts, introducing three new magnetic mounts that can be used with Apple's iPhones. There's a mounting option for filmmakers, a mount that lets you put your iPhone anywhere, and an adapter for using Moment magnetic mounts with non-MagSafe iPhones.

Priced at $99, the Mobile Filmmaker Cage is a two-handed cage that is meant to make it easier to mount mics and lights on the phone when filming video. It has multiple cold shoe, 1/4"-20, and ⅜"-16 attachment points for accessories.

The $40 Strap Anywhere Mount is, as the name suggests, designed to allow iPhone users to strap their iPhones anywhere, from bike handles to exercise equipment, allowing for hands-free operation.

Available for $10, the Moment Stick-On Adapter can be stuck to the back of a non-MagSafe iPhone to add a magnet that makes it compatible with the existing Moment MagSafe accessories. It uses 3M VHB adhesive for a strong bond to the device that it is attached to.

Along with these three products, Moment has updated its Wall Mount and Car Vent Mount with improved adjustable ball heads.

All of Moment's mounts are equipped with its (M)Force magnetic arrays, which it says are stronger than standard accessories for Apple for better attachment. The new accessories can be purchased from the Moment website.

I'd like to try it out on my bike, but it sounds kind of scary. I normally use a quad lock case but I don't want it on my Mini, I have a Pitaka case that I really enjoy.

Yiiiikes. I would not trust my phone magnetically mounted to any of my bikes.

Eeeek to hold a phone on a bike… Next up a parachute made from tissue paper.

I use a MagSafe compatible mount in my car with zero issues. The magnetic hold is quite strong. I would have no qualms at all about using it on a bike either. Now, if you're talking about stunt biking, jumping off ramps and crazy stuff like that, then maybe not, LOL!

I would LOVE to get that Mobile Filmmaker Cage, and then rig it up with a microphone and light like shown on the website. I'm sort of tempted to just buy the equipment shown in this photo, but I'm wondering if any of you have experience with lights and microphones like this? I basically just want to enhance the lighting and sound of my home videos (personal use for family videos, etc.).

I’ll agree to disagree a car is a much different comparison. For a few I’m sure it would work < few

If I installed carpet everywhere I wanted to ride and upholstered my bike with foam and leather, then maybe. ?

Your family is going to run and hide when you come after them with that contraption.

You have an excellent point!! I think I'm just annoyed mostly with the poor sound quality, especially when I take videos outdoors, and when I'm more than a few feet away from the subjects. The iPhone's video quality is remarkable, even in fairly low light conditions. But the microphone can only pick up so much sound from a distance. Not to mention the problems with wind and other outdoor noise. I feel like one of these microphones could improve it quite a bit.

I do. I’ve owned the Shure MV88+ mic (among others). It’s actually a really well made and good sounding mic, and the accompanying app is well thought out too. What’s nice about the mic is that it retains the settings IN THE MIC so anytime you plug it in, its already set. The video app allows you to access the parameters of the mic (stereo width, polar pattern etc). That all said, I ended up now using a Centrance Mixerface as my main device for audio capture. It’s more expensive but I didn’t want an app to dictate my hardware settings. While I had no problems using the MV88, it always concerned me that if there’s a faulty app update, Im sort of beholden to the apps stability. The Mixerface on the other hand is it’s own recorder as well. One idiosyncrasy about the MV88 is how it behaves with say extention cables and such. It seems the Shure lightning to micro usb is proprietary (a chip in the cable probably sort of has to “see” the iPhone). So some run of the mill amazon cable may not work. Also my friend used his mv88 to connect to an iPad Air and it didn’t see the iPad. Some rudimentary control was possible, but not the usual full range. I know it doesn’t apply here, but just saying. All that said, I actually still do recommend the MV88. for a small portable unit, it sounds quite good. I don’t know anything about using lights unfortunately.

Are we talking about bikes as in bicycles or bikes as in motorbikes? If the former, I don't really see how it would be all that much different, but if the latter, I understand that heavy vibrations from the engine may be a concern, though you could always test it in a controlled environment first.

This is a tech blog. Should know better about using the term “filming” instead of what it actually is, “recording.” Pretty sure the iPhone does not use film.

And iOS shouldn’t call it a “camera” since there isn’t actually a chamber!

Your car has actual suspension and you don't feel road imperfections unless its a pothole. With bikes, you literally feel the entire top layer of the road and your bike also has no suspension.

The worst that can happen to your phone in the car is you drop it and get some dirt on it.

I've ridden a bike plenty of times, and unless I was doing something crazy, I'd bet money that the same magnetic mount I use in my car would hold the phone just fine on my bike. It doesn't come off easily unless you firmly grip it and pull it off.

By the time you buy a low end light and mic you looking at maybe $150 total?

Smallrig has quality built gear for around $170 on their site and Amazon.

If use Amazon and have a CC you can use points on you can knock down the cost.

https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Smartphone-Stabilizer-Microphone-Streaming/dp/B0978RB9DL/ref=sr_1_3?crid=93MX8WKLP3J1&keywords=SmallRig+Professional+Phone+Video+Rig+Kit+for+Vlogging+&+Live+Streaming+3384&qid=1648587331&sprefix=smallrig+professional+phone+video+rig+kit+for+vlogging+&+live+streaming+3384,aps,488&sr=8-3

The side handles alone are $29 each if brought separately. The tripod below is $39 if brought separately.

If your interest is mainly family video you don't need a +$200 mic, a Rode Video Mirco @ $54 will do just fine.
https://www.amazon.com/Rode-VideoMicro-Compact-Camera-Microphone/dp/B015R0IQGW/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1O5Z28H5UXIVF&keywords=rode+videomicro&qid=1648588759&sprefix=rode+video+micro,aps,77&sr=8-3

However for connecting the mic to iPhone you'll also need a TRS to TRRS patch cable and and the Apple lighting to 3.5 mil adapter.

A more slick mic is the Deity V-Mic D4 Duo Microphone. It has a input jack, output jack and front and rear facing mics, so if you want to narrate a video you flick the switch on top to rear facing mic. $68 on Amazon.
(Still will need TRS to TRRS patch cable and Apple lighting to 3.5 mm adapter)

Review of both Rode and Deity:

The problem with cages like this and others is that they don’t account for phones of larger sizes with cases. theyre usually for mid sized phones but don’t take the Max versions (where the camera is usually the best) very well. It’s usually a pretty tight fit with the spring loaded clamp. This is what makes the Moment good in this regard (and magsafe in general). It’s one size fits all.

Only offering alternative option. Each person must look at specs, namely how big a phone with case can clamp fit, and what you get for the price. In this case the clamp is wide enough to accommodate a case. Plus with the security of screw down clamp your phone ain't going no where.
Yup the Moment cage is simpler but you get more bank for the buck elsewhere.
The Moment cage alone is nothing without the added attachments, else why get a phone cage in the first place.

I agree. The specs etc in the fine print. Smallrig actually has another cage that I like better for cable management (Posted below) I think the Moment is ok… but the there’s no centered bottom 1/4 20 because of the MagSafe screw on area (my subtle OCD won’t have it!) I do actually own the Moment MagSafe car mount and a camera mount (the shorter stem one) and the magnets are quite good, so that’s another plus for the Moment, but that cable management just kinda bugs Because it means one has to crimp the cable a bit adding to stress. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XNQC6Y6/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_6EXAC2YP4J7YNZ5VYXH3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Since Apple released the magsafe function in 2020, it has indeed changed the way the traditional phone holder is used.
The iPhone 12 and 13 series of phones have built-in ring magnets. I found that this has also been caught by many mobile phone stand manufacturers. They changed the traditional button magnet integrated on the phone holder.
Make the magnets the same size as the iPhone's built-in magnetic coil, so that they can directly attract the phone. No need to use iron sheets. It is said that this iron piece is also an obstacle that hinders wireless charging.
This change is really convenient
ciencimy magsafe car mount seems worth to choose.
