If your interest is mainly family video you don't need a +$200 mic, a Rode Video Mirco @ $54 will do just fine.

However for connecting the mic to iPhone you'll also need a TRS to TRRS patch cable and and the Apple lighting to 3.5 mil adapter.

A more slick mic is the Deity V-Mic D4 Duo Microphone. It has a input jack, output jack and front and rear facing mics, so if you want to narrate a video you flick the switch on top to rear facing mic. $68 on Amazon.
