I'm trying to monitor (listen to) the input of audio into my Digital In port. I've got my external Sonos media player sending music into my Mac Pro. In the sound control panel, I can see that the audio is coming in, I just can't hear. I can't find an option to enable myself to hear it (monitor it).

Any suggestions? I hope I don't need a third party utility just to hear audio input?

Audacity - an amazing audio application

Yes. You need software. The mac does not know to route input to the speakers. Another useful program is Audacity. It will allow you to record what is coming in and edit the sound visually. It can export the sounds to mp3 or AAC or wav files. You can over-dub other tracks as well.

google for audacity. There is both a winblows version and a Mac version. Good stuff.
