Monitor For MBP - Worth It?

Hey guys,

Everyone was so helpful with my MBP purchase I figured I could abuse of your kindness a little more.

Thinking of buying this monitor. For the price this sales seems like a no-brainer. I'm not a huge gamer, but I do watch a lot of videos/movies on my computer and figured the specs would help with my overall usage, between work (mod graphic designing/video editing) + all my hobbies.

Are you sure you want a display that big?
It probably will only look good if you use the "full" 4k resolution (no scaling).
However, even at full 4k, text may "look small" when displayed at normal font sizes...

I use a Dell 43" monitor with a 2015 15" MBP permanently in clamshell mode as a desktop. It's great but the monitor is absolutely enormous so using all the corners you need to swivel your head as if you were watching tennis.😀

43" seems a bit too big for me personally, especially at a standard 16:9 aspect ratio. I would personally prefer an ultra-wide over something like this. My own personal setup is dual 27" 4K displays and even with that I find myself not using all my screen real estate because I have to actively turn my head instead of just darting my eyes around the screen.

Also as others have noted you start using pixel density stretching 4K across that kind of size, though you could probably just run it at 1:1 scaling and still have it be legible.

Yeah I don’t know what I was thinking,
43” is way overkill. I have a 50” TV in my bedroom and the display looks comical at my desk next to it. Might limit it to 32” max, but I think maybe a dual 27” might be the way to go. Thanks for all the suggestions, if you have any options to list I’d appreciate it

Definitely a case of “know yourself”… I would be driven bonkers by the low dpi (I have dual 32” 4K monitors that I find too low resolution), however I also have a 42” OLED gaming setup running Windows and that looks fine. I do not use it regularly or for much outside of gaming (YouTube videos, which always scale relatively) so don’t know if I’d still be content using it more generally.

As you seem to have changed your desires to the 27-32” range you can hopefully find places with such displays to see how they work “live”… I’m sure 27” 4K looks pretty good and you’ll have to know yourself as well for curved displays (I detest them). As mentioned, I find 32” 4K to be noticeably inferior for my daily computing and if your MBPro is recent, it’s difficult to use a display so gorgeous on the laptop only to switch to a low quality screen on the desk… again, that’s me talking. Most people seem fine using tech I’d scratch my eyes out on…

Windows uses sub-pixel rendering to make text look better on a larger range of display sizes. MacOS removed that technology several years ago, as it is computationally expensive -- and they licensed it from MS, so probably actually expensive.

You'll find countless internet posts "Why does my screen look good on Windows but not on macOS?".


A 32" 4K display will be 137ppi, which is small enough to look smooth and crisp, but at the cost of things being tiny. And you can't really scale it to anything useful either.

I'm happy to read this. I caught some flak for buying a 4K 27" last year, but at my day and age that's all the screen real estate that I can keep in focus without turning my head. I feel validated now.

Went to Best Buy this weekend and now I suffer from this
 
Another thing I didn't realize is how few monitors actually have built-in speakers. Guess using laptops forever makes you miss those little details.

You want a large monitor, but not a traditional 16:9 one. Look for an 40 or 49-inch ultrawide.

The regular 43-inch models are too tall for practical use.
 
I'm going to stick with something in the 27-34" range. 34" only if I go wide. But right now I'm thinking a 27" 4k LED display should work well for me. Wish I had the funds to dish out for an Apple Studio Display.
