I want to weigh in here because I got the Asus MX27UC display and I've had a terrible time. Here's the story:

It's a GORGEOUS display.

But it has MAJOR compatibility issues with the 2016 13" MBP with touchbar over USB-C. Works fine over HDMI with dongle, and I assume displayport too, but completely unusable over USB-C. In fact, no image at all, and it crashes the machine. Confirmed this with two different identical 13" MBPs.

However, it works like a dream with the 15" MBP I suspect because it uses a different graphics card. I hope that Apple, or Asus, or both, release a firmware update so the Asus can work with the 13" over USB-C (one cable to rule them all). But unfortunately, after much tech support with Apple and Asus, both blaming the other, seems I'm SOL and stuck with HDMI for now until their game of chicken is over.

Same issue with 2017 MacBook Pro 13”. No picture over USB-C cable, but works with Apple USB-C to HDMI/USB/USB-C dongle. It is even possible to connect to the monitor two cables using dongle – HDMI and USB-C having video output and charging from the display.

ASUS, we are waiting for the display firmware patch!

I had always thought I'd want a USB-C monitor for my next purchase as well, however the options on the market are very limited. Too many compromises or just too expensive (LGUD88, LG Ultrafine 5k, etc.).

The main advantage (to me) of using a USB-C monitor are the included dock features. With the exception of the LG Ultrafine 5K, I haven't found a single monitor yet which has all the ports I'd need from a dock perspective (ethernet, USB-A, USB-C). The LG Ultrafine 5k could accomplish all this, albeit with an adapter. The other complaint is that you'll be hard pressed to find ANY USB-C monitor which will power a 15'' MBP (85W+ Power Delivery). So, especially for 15'' MBP users, a lot of the incentive for going with a USB-C monitor is lost.

I'll be going with a Thunderbolt 3 docking station to go along with a 4k HDMI-based (or Displayport) monitor. This way, I can get the exact panel I want for a reasonable price, and I will still have the 1-cable solution for power, data and video. The Caldigit dock is currently at the top of my list, however I'm patiently waiting for someone (other than OWC) to launch a space gray option :)

The 38" Dell U3818DW supports 100W over its USB C connection and can pass through audio and standard USB-A through a single USB-C cable. I use one right now and absolutely love it, you can find them pretty cheap on eBay (brand new for ~$1,000 vs $1,200 on Amazon or Newegg).
