Mophie today announced the launch of a new Qi wireless charger for Apple's iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, the Mophie Charge Stream Pad+.

Mophie says the Charge Stream Pad+ is its first universal high-speed wireless charging accessory, compatible with the fast charging capabilities of both Apple and Samsung devices.

For Apple's most recent iPhones, that means the Charge Stream Pad+ supports the faster 7.5W charging introduced back in December. Mophie's existing wireless charger, the Wireless Charging Base, also supports 7.5W charging.

Smart charging circuitry inside of the Charge Stream Pad+ communicates with an iPhone or other smartphone to determine and deliver the optimal amount of power.

Design wise, the Charge Stream Pad+ looks like your average Qi-based wireless charger, with a circular flat base where you rest your phone. A non-slip rubberized finish makes sure your iPhone stays in place, and it also ships with a wall adapter and USB-A to microUSB cable. It comes in black or white to match any decor.

The Mophie Charge Stream Pad+ is also compatible with all Charge Force Mophie Juice Pack battery cases designed for the iPhone and for Samsung smartphones, such as the Juice Pack Air for the iPhone 7, which enables wireless charging.

The Charge Stream Pad+ can be purchased from the Mophie website for $59.95.

So what’s the difference between this and the charging base?

looks like they just added a white color option and a micro-usb cable. I saw this article on my bloomberg screen and thought maybe it was an old article until I saw the white option.

This one looks nice and for $60, seems reasonable. It could have better longevity if devices start using 10W in the future.

Not an outrageous price, but I can only imagine the profit margins on these things has to be through the roof.

Side note... notch haters can say what they want, but that iPhone X is one sexy phone. I wish I were bold enough to carry mine without a case. It looks amazing in those marketing shots.

they all do the same thing, charge as long as its 7.5w for iphone why does it matter if its a known brand waste of money

Maybe I’m in the minority, but why is wireless charging worth 60 bucks? 7.5 Watts is fast? You can get a 12watt Apple wall plug for $19

I could see the justification is it charged multiple devices to eliminate clutter but seems to be limited to one device.

[doublepost=1522968264][/doublepost]We now have a series of qi discs around the house and office, and a rather nice pair of led desk lamps with qi charging built in. The discs are less than $10 each and both the lamps together are only slightly more expensive than this new charger. It is difficult to see why one should pay this much (or for the Belkin device that is “blessed” on the Apple Store). And the upcoming device from Apple, to charge multiple devices, appears to be set at an even more fantasy price.

We have a different view of “reasonable”. I have a great LED desk light with qi charging and a spare USB port for $35 Australian. That’s reasonable. $60 US for a simple qi charging disk is a ripoff.

After using both pad and stand, not sure why anyone would use a pad.
I use a pad for overnight charging, so even 5W exceeds my needs. The battery lasts well over a day unless it’s getting very intense use, and then I leave it sitting on the Chargé pad on my desk when the phone doesn’t need to be in my hand. I had a stand for the very first iPhone. Never bothered since.

To be fair, I haven't really done my research on wireless charging (and I know I probably shouldn't comment because of that) so I don't really know if there is a better cheaper option. By all means, if you have a reliable cheaper option I'd love to hear about it. I haven't picked one of these up yet.
