still learning my way around here, so sorry about all the questions.. i notice if i click on airport icon at top of screen and turn it on, there are a bunch of networks,(i guess thats what theyre called?), with lock icons next to them..who are all those people? they arent on my mac are they??

Those are just other people's wireless networks in your neighborhood/apartment complex/etc. The locks mean that they are encrypted (password protected) networks. If you have your own wireless network, other people can also see its name and possibly connect to it, which is why it's a good idea to turn on WPA (password protection).
