Well, I have a feeling most of us were buying this thing anyway?

You're correct, but now there are more people caught up in the frenzy. There's the scalpers and people who only want this damn thing because it's hard to get. So the people that really need it are in a state of urgency. they're either paying 2x the price or flying high speed to the store.

I just don't think they would be selling out this fast if the stock was available from launch.

I've just heard that Apple are currently a-pointing new stock logistics managers...

Apple Oxmoor in Louisville also had some today. I purchased two!

As far as checking stock, call your local Apple Store and when the automated system asks how it can help you, say "manager". It gets you to a person in store every time.

Mind if I ask what time? I was there at 10:15, at which time they "had none in stock and had not had any in stock at any time up to now". I thought first thing in the morning was the only stocking time.

I just got back from the Kenwood store in Cincinnati, OH. No Apple Pencil but I did get a Keyboard and they had two left at 6:20 PM EST. I just got off the phone with the Easton store in Columbus, OH. They just sold out of Pencils 10 minutes ago..

You need a specialist to but the keyboard and I believe the Pencil. When I ask the specilaist when the shipments come in, she didn't know. She said to check the website or app. I told her that it's not an option. I even pulled up the keyboard I had in my hand that I hadn't paid for yet. She was surprised that it didn't have a store option. She had trouble finding it on her hand held device.

I have 5 Apple stores within 30 minutes of where I live and none of them have pencils in stock. :(

The scalpers don't do Apple any favors, though... If anything, it hurts Apple.

Are the boxes really that huge ? most of it would probably be packaging....

I take this as "O.K" for products, or wearable's. but not for small things like a pencil ...which could eaasily be in a much thinner box... u don't get anything else, so why is the box that big ?

Thank goodness Apple does go for recyclable

I was able to grab one at the Arrowhead Mall store in Glendale, AZ. They had 3 left. I cancelled my online order.

You get an extra nib, instructions and a converter for the male lighting end turning it into a female lighting plug so you can charge with regular lighting cords.

I find it interesting that this site posts an article on it's front page which only relates to people within the US. Over 50% of Apple's revenues are generated outside of the US....

I'm really surprised that Apple didn't make the Apple Pencil magnetic so that it sticks to the side of the iPad pro.

What, the same device you're constantly sliding in and out of a stand or case, picking up, rotating etc? Yeah, can see why they didn't actually.

I don't think they thought through the Pro product very well.

Actually, I was lucky enough to pick up a Pencil each for my wife and I for the iPad Pros I picked up on Wednesday last week. I had bought the case and Smart Cover as well on Wednesday... turns out the Pencil's charging end, while not being magnetic itself, does stick to the Smart Cover on the magnetic side that triggers the sleep/wake. Not too differently from the way the Surface Pen attaches magnetically...

When I bought the iPad last week, the guy was telling me they get shipments randomly, not always first thing in the morning. Apparently they could show up mid-day, even.

I actually feel a little bad about the way I found out the store here in Tucson had them in stock.

I tried calling the local store, and the automated system put me to an obviously centralized sales person... She was very cordial when she answered, and then when I asked if the Pencils were in stock, she proceeded to tell me that they weren't available in stores yet. After a long day of work, I didn't respond in the nicest manner, and said "Well, perhaps you should check online, because there are sites with postings from customers saying that some stores have them in stock, which is why I tried to call the local store and speak to someone there instead of an operator reading a script." As she told me that the system shows them not available yet but that she would call the store, I could tell by her tone that I had been a bit heavy-handed in my approach.

I've been trying to get one myself everyday since they went on sale calling the store. I too have gotten her same response and have to always tell them to check the store. However, of they only get a small number they don't update their inventory to reflect it so you're only sure bet is to visit the actual store.

Hopefully sometime one will come before the 4-5 week shipment window in Milwaukee, WI

As an Apple Retail Specialist I can tell you that calling stores will sometimes work but is more likely to just result in frustration. We're not supposed to give out inventory over the phone as it can result in setting the wrong expectations for a customer by the time they get to the store.

What a joke, the pencil should have been included with the iPad Pro. Out of the box, the it's only a jumbo iPad...

But then the people who only wanted a jumbo iPad would complain they were being forced to buy a pencil they didn't want.

The magnetic attachment would provide only a false sense of security. Joanna Stern of the WSJ liked the Surface Pen but complained that she managed to lose it at an airport.

Going to check Crabtree in Raleigh after lunch.....wish me luck. Anyone beats me there and hits the lottery pick me one up! :)

The Boulder Colorado store had some in stock yesterday. I bought mine at 3pm and they said they had "less than 5" in stock at the time.

Nope. There's an Apple Store on Walnut St in Philly. I live right down the street from it.

Author here. I definitely mean the Walnut Street store in Philadelphia.

Looks like there is a Shadyside Apple Store in Pittsburgh, also on a Walnut Street, so I can see your confusion.

Thanks for the clarification, even if it's evidence of yet another city being jealous of the 'burgh to the point of copying us.:D

~20 NYC apple Pencils about to hit eBay for 3-400% markup in 3.. 2.. 1..
