New feature request

the main feature that i am waiting for is Rendzvous support for library shairing. I have 4 computers in my house, and i am sick and tired of trying to synchronize my files with all my computers. Also, being able to share with a rendezvous stereo would be nice

That's all great.. but it would totally suck if we'll be spammed by all kinds of Buy Now Buy Buy windows and stupid offers. I want iTunes to play mp3's without being annoyed.

Online music service ......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......why am I so underwhelmed and why is everyone so excited at the prospect of paying 99 cents per song !!!! If true it would be an outrageous price given today's REALITY (kazaa) .... wake me up when Apple introduces something TRULY innovative and/or fast (read dual 2.4 ghz PPC 970)...

Because most of us would rather legally obtain music we like.

As someone whose income partly depends on the sale of original .pdf files on the internet, the link becomes quite clear. If too many people illegally copy my files rather than pay, I'll have to stop producing alltogether and find another job. The same holds true in the much larger world of music mp3s, though the damage may take longer to notice (which is the only reason I can figure out why people who like this music would screw over those who produce it by stealing it; because they can't see any immediate harm to the artist). That said, smart artists give away some percentage of their work for free. As is apparent, everyone loves free stuff, all the more so if it is truely free, not simply stolen.

For real. I remember reading about a Rendezvous TiVo a few months ago, which I think would kick ass. I don't have a TiVo now, but I would buy one if it had the ability to stream audio and video to my computer over rendezvous/airport.

Rendezvous

To be frank, what I am looking forward to the most is Rendezvous library sharing. There are a few comps in my house, but only 1 has a CD burner in it. I'd love to be able to simply burn a library from a computer downstairs, without having to copy the data once, add it to a new playlist, burn it, delete the playlist and delete the songs frmo my library and hard drive. The CD burner only burns i think at 8x, so it wouldn't be that big of a deal with buffer underruns (i don't think so...)

The same thing that happens if you buy a CD and leave it in the sun on a hot summer day, or if your car stereo gets stolen with your CD in it, etc ...

IMHO, most likely there will be a viable backup process to prevent this from having any effect on you whatsoever.

Something that I'm really looking forward to is the ability to preview songs from a nice central location (iTunes), rather than needing to go searching all over the 'net to find previews (and more than half the time fail, at that)

I think the idea is to have all these new features integrated into iTunes. So just as you have the pathway to internet radio stations in your playlists column, you'll probably have a pathway to music download servers which you could browse and search. Double click on the song and you'll get a window giving you the option to preview or download the song. You should be able to set preferences so that you can download the songs to one specific folder OR let iTunes automatically sort the songs based on their genre or artist.

Personally I doubt that this would happen, Apple is not big on advertisments like that nor pop-ups, take the .mac webmail for example-the page is simple and has zero ads on it and that is what I expect from a paid service. I doubt iTunes is going to turn into the Apple equivalent of RealPlayer.

Does anyone know if it will finally support encoding MP4/AAC files? I assume that if it does the iPod will also be updated to support MP4/AAC.

That's been bandied about. But NOBODY knows what the music service will be like (except the few at Apple) and they ain't telling... yet.

I'd think that all current iPods will be updated via firmware to play AAC files via the new iTunes. But again, Apple hasn't even admitted they're working on iTunes 4, new iPods or a music service.

You must be a .Mac member...

What apple really needs to do is make .mac worth something. Anybody with a little know how can find web and file space for cheap, or go to the source for software. Not that many people are sharing their calendars or addressbooks. But the more unique services it offers, the better, and ultimately it could be indispensable. Personally I'd like to see .mac coordinate and integrate all varieties of communication, including cell phone/voice mail service. Providing Tivo-type data would be good too, but I suspect that beyond the mentioned music services we may see video-on-demand type stuff as well. If it had and promoted popular content not commonly found on local TV, theaters, or video stores *coughanime* it could really take off.

Too many ifs and buts...

The reality is that Kazaa is crap and by the public consensus illegal, plus you never know what you get with p2p networks. With this service you get better quality and you know its legit. Also, that fact that it comes from our little computer company makes it even better.
True. Between me and my friends, I have all the access I want to music on CD. Rip it at a decent bit-rate (128k sucks!) and make mix discs of whatever mood music I choose. Apple, or anybody for that matter, offering songs at 99 cents each is a waste of time. Great for those of us that have high speed internet connections (DSL doesn't compare to my cable modem), cr@p for the rest that don't. Remember, AOL has over 24 million members! It has to be friendly for them, otherwise Apple won't gain any real traction in the market. The 3% of PC users that use Mac's isn't nearly enough to sustain a service of this magnitude. If the service is offered, is it going to play nice with the mindless drones on AOL using Windows 98/Me and Windows Media Player 4/5/6/7/8/9 ? That is what will determine if this catches on. How soon until MSN users are blocked for some reason??? Besides, we don't know for certain if this reality anyway...

April will be big...

...for Apple's Digital Hub/Lifestyle. Tivo is to roll out the Home Media Option this month, which will allow you to view photos and listen to MP3s via your Tivo + home entertainment center that are stored on your Mac. All wirelessly via Airport. I imagine a jumbo Digital Lifestyle announcement by Apple that will include 1) new download music service, 2) new iPods, 3) new versions of iTunes/iPhotos that work with 4) Tivo's Home Media Option. I can't wait. I returned my 20G iPod in February after reading rumors of a 40G model, and I can't stand to wait much longer.

Here's hoping this stuff is announced early in the month vs. the end of the month. I can't bear to wait another 3 weeks.

I was just at CompUSA yesterday and saw a similar device from HP for $200 ($300 wireless) that hooks up to your TV and lets you listen to mp3 or view photo's from your LAN. I didn't notice if it was Mac compatible.
