voice recognition will only work if you got an american accent :p ;)

The VoiceSignal one (I think now they are called nuance) learns how you speak over time, and adapts to all types of accents. I know people who have heavy asian accents use voice command flawlessly.

Think if you could just say "snooze," or maybe more accurately "shut the f* up damn alarm" instead of having to press a button. Beautiful.
Oh my, THAT would be cool.

As for voice dialing. Never works reliably IMHO. If they can make it 100% reliable then sure. Ah well, I don't mind extra features. There's always someone that needs a certain feature.

And text to speech; sure, if it can do other languages...

Voice Control...yay!

I like this idea because it means that we're one step closer to the having our computers work like the one on Star Trek. You just say "computer" and it makes a little noise to let you know it's listening then you ask it whatever you need to know or tell it to do whatever you need done. :) Keep working Apple...you'll get there eventually!

I know many of us installed the google app with voice search. But who actually uses it?

I for do not ever, but i think that may be due to it not being very accessible.

My theory is, the new search screen to the far left is going to have plenty of room for for than a search field. So how about a button to activate a voice command?

Maybe with this ability, you can tell your phone all your problems, and it could turn around and comfort you. :p

Mac OSX actually has voice control but the little round window is weird and it unexpectedly quits quite lot. Oh and the knock knock Jokes aren't funny.

But the cool thing is that it can guess unknown words pretty well. Leopard's speech engine is quite good actually. I made an entire book into an mp3 (using automator) and listen to it on the iPod. Very creepy at first, but you get used to the Alex voice telling you a story. The voice may seem unfittingly enthousiastic at times though.

Example:
- Tell me the truth. She died, right? :(
- YES!!!:eek::) I am sorry for your loss.

voice to text to voice?

Ok, so I speak to my phone, it translates it to text. I send it to my friend. Rather than reading the text, he has it spoken back to him. WTF? I mean call me old fashioned but, why wouldn't I just send him a voicemail and skip all the middlemen?

While I'm on it, so will this mean I'll slowly see "wtf" replaced with "what the f#ck" because surely we aren't so lazy as to not SPEAK it out...

May be stating the obvious, or perhaps a little known fact.

If using Safari (or any Cocoa app, I believe), you can highlight a block of text, go under the Safari menu-->Services-->Speech-->Start Speaking Text to hear Leopard's speech engine in action. There is a Preference Pane in System Prefs where you can change the voice and speed. As noted above, Alex is a little blasé at times, but you can get used to him in a pinch.

This would be terrific if built into the iPhone OS. Suddenly every book (Kindle) becomes an audio book...as well as simple integration into other Apps like iPod, Mail, etc. If they can cram it into the Shuffle, surely it can fit in an iPhone.

Two thumbs up for voice recognition... if it works. Obviously voice dial comes to mind, but I'm thinking about uses for things like iPod control and activating "snooze" w/ an alarm clock app. Think if you could just say "snooze," or maybe more accurately "shut the f* up damn alarm" instead of having to press a button. Beautiful.

#1 It would probably mistake my loud snoring for a comand to snooze.

#2 It would be much more intuitive to use the motion sensor to snooze the alarm clock the moment you start throwing the thing. ;)

#3 I got the snooze gesture down in muscle memory: locate the home button and the speaker slip with the thumb and middle finger and just tap the middle finger right inbetween. Doing the slide to unlock is even easier which is bad for lazy people like me. I'd love to have to solve a labyrinth to fully disarm the alarm. Or anything requiring some level of mental awakeness.

How about a displayed bomb and a message telling you to tap the red, blue and then yellow wire. If you do it wrong, the phone vibrates for 20 seconds until you can try again.

You can already do that with your Mac. :D

True, but I think the shuffle doesn't produce the speech itself but the computer does this while syncing. That's why it's the Alex voice when you sync to a Mac and the old Windows voice when you're on Windows. iTunes probably just runs the track and artist names through the built-in voice generator and uploads it into the iPod shuffe. It's also much easier to recognize speech with such a limited vocabulary.

Shame it will probably only work in english

I don't know about this ... I think I'd feel weird talking into my phone.

Matt

Initially, when the telephone first hit the market, there was a lot of resistance to using it. As one businessman once said, "No self-respecting man would be caught talking to a box on the wall."

Don't you guys understand what this means?

Jon Favreau predicted this on an episode of Friends!!

"It's not gonna be able to do any of those things but it'll understand what you're saying."

He's A GENIOUS!!!

I'm going outside now.

Good for Grandpa

My Gramps hands are a little shaky these days at 87 yrs old. He loves his iPhone but it's a little difficult for him at times. It would be great to have some voice features like, "Call Jon" "Check Email" "Listen to Glenn Miller"
I say bring it on.

Sounds like a good idea, but hardly ever works properly...well from my experience, must be the kiwi accent

My original point was about how I don't think this speak to your iPhone lark has any legs... It's pretty much a fad, and I don't want a fad taking up space etc on my iPhone. I want more practical features like say - 100mb/s data connection - ability to edit MS Word Docs - fold out HD screen/projector - and maybe more colours.

iPhone gold and silver and PLATINUM - bling bling y'all !

How are these things "practical?"

I think they'd be practical in the sense that they'd be less inclined to get crusty fingerprints all over from all my ho's fingering up this shizzle.

Seriously though... I don't speak like a typical educated british person. Is this thing gonna understand me when I holla at it? Cos if it doesn't then how is this not discrimination? You get me ?

One of the things that I think makes the iPhone so great is that every one of its functions works well, and has a practical use. I hope Apple doesn't fall into the trap of cramming in gimmicks just to compete with the "other" phones. And in that I'd include voice dialling (unless it's really, really good), video chat and cameras with more resolution that the lense/sensor can handle. Let's keep it an Apple iPhone, not a Samsung/Nokia/LG/Sony iPhone.

How are these things "practical?"

I don't know about a fold out screen... (lol), but that pica projector technology is pretty cool. it wouldn't be any larger than the camera lense. I'd like to see the iPhone in a few more colors too, like a graphite gray or gun metal gray, or maybe a nice aluminum or cobalt finish. :apple:

NightFox, I'm hoping that any voice technology isn't a gimmick. I pray that like some of the other features in 3.0, they're making it work really well before unleashing it. If it's a feature that separates old iPhone from new iPhone (like some people think video capture/editing may), that's fine as well. It won't break my heart if my 3G won't fit the bill, but if it does, I'd rather it be slick and functional.

If I had to make a guess, I think MobileMe has made Apple a bit more careful when it comes to launching new software!
