And this is precisely why I bought an iPad Mini. It is the perfect ratio and size for a mini tablet. Google needs to dump the 16:9 ratio on the next iteration.

The 4:3 aspect ratio and 7.9 inch screen size of the retina mini was by itself reason enough for me to choose it over the Nexus 7. If a Nexus with that screen size came out now it would probably be too late; I'm already happy with my mini. But it might make a difference a few years from now when it becomes time to upgrade.

Don't you dare reply "that's what she said" but does 1 inch really make that much difference?

The screen size of the mini has more than 30% more area and the Nexus 7, and that's even ignoring that the Android OS uses some of that area for onscreen buttons. In addition, because of the different aspect ratio, the Nexus 7 screen is about an inch narrower than that of the mini, which makes a big difference displaying pdfs, especially in portrait mode. So, I'd answer yes.

Glad I ran into this thread. Between me and a family member, we went through 5 new Retina iPad Mini's. All had problems with uneven white backgrounds (usually had yellow on the bottom) and all were returned. We ended up getting the non-Retina Mini's for really good prices. Here I was sitting on my Mini thinking, "man, did I make a mistake, should I have tried out a Nexus 7?" I've tried them in the store for couple seconds and even just looking at screenshots online the thing looks a bit awkward. Those gigantic bezels on the top and bottom plus the long, narrow screen. Seems like most agree, it would be taken more seriously with a 4:3 screen ratio. Wouldn't hurt to make it an inch bigger while they're at it.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease, going back to enjoying my iPad mini. Although after using the Retina Mini for a few days it's been painful to go back to non-Retina. Hopefully next year they'll get better quality screens.

Surprised no one has suggested the 'HP Slate 8 Pro'.

This one seems ideal. 8" and 4x3 format. Just wish Amazon UK would get some in as I have a load of vouchers for Birthday and Christmas to use.
