I'm not saying I have a record of weird bugs in 10.5, just I guessing I'm not the only one saying "what the hell?" once in a while when I notice something odd with the UI or user-facing things (quicklook? Finder? Though I never liked the OS X Finder).

This one has to do with UI. Everyone knows Leopard performs smoother with a graphics card that supports OpenGL2/Core Image right? Well, here's one case where it's not making sense:

Picture 8.jpg

Sheets! When a window with a sheet attached has focus, something weird happens.

Looking at the Windowserver' process with activity monitor, here's how much CPU it uses when this example sheet app has user focus under 10.5.8:

Dual 533Mhz Digital Audio, radeon 9000 (no CI):

Sheet Application: 7.5%
WindowServer: 7.0%

Dual 1.5ghz MDD, radeon 9600 (CI):

Sheet Application: 3.9%
WindowServer: 20% - What ?

iBook G4 1.33ghz, max perf settings, radeon mobile 9550 (CI)

Sheet App: 6%
WindowServer: 28.5% - ????

Is this already documented somewhere? I looked this up for a bit but nothing relevant came up. Does it happen to someone else?

To test it, you can probably use the standard per-document save dialog (happens there too) in TextEdit or something like that. But for the least noise possible download the sheets test application attached. It's an original apple developer example for how to display sheets.

I haven't really paid attention to WindowServer CPU usage, but next time I boot up a PPC I'll check it out.

I mainly came here to say that I have no problems with Leopard's Finder, and actually notice bugs constantly on Tiger's Finder. The most common and obvious one is that highlighting files, especially multiple files, ends up not looking right and only highlights a little bit of the icon. That has happened to me since I first started using Mac's which was really on Panther and Tiger back in the day. I see it on low end G3s, all the way up to G5. Just a weird bug they never fixed I guess.

@Project Alice Don't forget how even when there's nothing selected, the Clean Up function under the View menu will commonly display "Clean Up Selection" instead of "Clean Up". Then you need to select and then deselect a file to reset it back to normal.

Tiger's Finder was a mess. Yet even so, I still prefer it over Leopard. Resource usage is exceedingly important.

I use Leopard on everything with a G4. Including slow ones like a Pismo with a G4, and my B&W. I'm convinced people thinking it's slower is a bandwagon or placebo. The difference is negligible. It feels slower with crappy GPUs like a Rage 128, but anything with at least QE runs pretty smooth in my experience.

The sheets app wasn't using any CPU. WindowServer wasn't really either. It went up yo 17% while opening the grab app, then it went back down.

Edit: I wasn't paying attention when I took the screenshot, but I actually had TFF open to this page while I took it, it was just minimized in the dock. My overall CPU usage is very low as well is memory. This is a 15" AlBook.

Um.. Maybe it's just misleading me, but with the screenshot you provided I gotta ask; the Sheets app windows instruct to hit the close box to show a sheet. Did you look at activity monitor while the sheet was displayed and frontmost? I mean, the Sheet's OK button has to be aqua blue and pulsing (like in my screenshot), so activity monitor has to be in background while looking at it.

Hmm, I did not. It was in the foreground. I will look more into this again when I have time.

Sorry for going off topic but would you mind sharing the wallpaper? :)
On the contrary, this is very on topic for any thread ever posted on the PPC forum and I can't believe it took this many posts before somebody asked. ;)

@Project Alice What irks me about that one is that the laptop in the background isn't even a PowerPC.

And also that everyone seemed to forget about that wallpaper collection we did.

Yeah, that always bothered me too. However it is a cool picture. I wish the original maker would redo it with a PowerBook G4, though. I have absolutely no idea how to do it myself. The wallpaper on my MDD is a close up of circuitry with two obviously Intel CPUs, but with the G4 emblem in my profile pic on the top of them. But still a cool wallpaper nonetheless.
