With the site having grown so much, I've noticed a longer and longer lag time from when a problem post is reported until a mod gets around to taking action on that post. Since the forum has grown so much I'm sure the poor mods are swamped, so I think it might be time for more mods.

Or here's an interesting idea, instead of more moderators you could add a "flag" system that if enough people report a post then it'll automatically get hidden until a mod can have the time to review it and choose appropriate action. If a system like that were thoughtfully designed it could improve the moderation of the forums without the need for more moderators and without allowing the possibility of people gaming the system.

That sounds like a pretty good idea. Are there really a lot of posts that need to be taken down?

Most of the problem posts don't need deletion, but there are tons of posts that need other types of moderations. Some need editing due to abusive comments, some need removal of curse words, some are threads that were started in the wrong forum and need to be moved into the correct forum, sometimes people accidentally do a double post of the same comment and need removal since they clutter up the forum, etc.

If I surf the forum for an hour or two I usually see a couple of problem posts that require moderation.

Well it was 3 minutes until I saw it but it seems that others got there first. More post reports are what is needed.

No idea what you are talking about, but every time I see an issue, the mods are right there with the whip. I was even sent a PM (from a Mod) yesterday about a questionable post.

I don't think that we actually need more mods, as others have said, we need more people reporting posts. If you see a problematic post (spam, nonsense, ect.), don't reply to it, just report it. It is truly up to the admins to decide if more mods are needed, they are just volunteers and the numbers of them depend on how many are logged in at one time. Theoretically there could be no mods logged in at all at one time, or only 1, while other times they all might be logged in.

I agree that we don't need more mods at the moment, currently there are almost too many, for example there isn't always enough time to read the smartass replies to spam messages before they are deleted :p.

Really? I thought we were pretty good most of the time on dealing with that sort of stuff. Sometimes, some reports need a little chat amongst the team, sometimes we're working in another part of the board, doing other things... sometimes we might be making lunch.

Most straightforward reports are handled within an hour or so, many within minutes and commercial spammers are often shown the door before they can be reported.

I think it's fair to say that the moderating situation here is under constant review.
