Alright, as long as the iPod isn't turning into some complex gaming handheld, but more like games for cell phones. Pick-up play for a quick fix. No developing story, no depth. Just simple arcade-style games. However, do remember your controls are pretty much the scroll wheel which gives you left and right or a complete 360° and one select button.

They should sell some games through iTunes Music Store. That would work nicely.

If I'm not mistaken, the ARM-7 in is the GBA and Nintendo DS. GameBoy game developers can pick this up easily.

The GBA has a 16 MHz ARM7, the Nintendo DS has a 33 MHz ARM7 *and* 66 MHz ARM9.

CELL

Imagine the new CELL chip which can scale down to iPod size/power consumption. Plug it into your tv and watch downloaded HD movies or play any of your games with your Bluetooth game controller. Hey all of your games can be stored on the iPod so forget all those game cartridges.
I would like to see a 802.11g capable dock so my iPod can charge and update anywhere in my house.
One last thing. I like the idea of using my Bluetooth iPod as a universal REMOTE for anything digital. It displays all devices with bluetooth and lets you control them with the best easy to use interface PERIOD.
Hey Apple HIRE ME! This stuff just rolls out.

A bit off topic, but
I'd love to see an Apple branded DS with an iPod put in it. There is plenty of space for a HD if they remove the GBA slot.

true, and in a recent interview with Sega's big chief he hinted about a smaller DS coming out without a GBA port. might happen?

To Great games for ipod

Click wheel = Centipede (who doesn't remember hours of fun times getting you hands pinched in that ball you used to roll to controll the game!)

Also Pac Man would work great!

Tempest would be faboo

Tempest would work very well with a click wheel. The original game ran well under MacMame on even a 68K Mac. On a color iPod, the simple vector graphics would be a delight....bright and colorful, well suited for a wheel...

(For trivia buffs, before MacMame, Juri Munki ported Tempest to the Mac as Arashi. It doesn't require a lot of CPU power; the game is fast paced; and color, while optional, would certain make it a lot more fun!)

 I just don't see how you could EVER play games on the iPod with its current button config. The wheel and the layout is great for music and running through lists but games? Its going to be very limited to only those that work well with the scroll wheel.

perfect games for the scroll wheel

*Atari's "Tempest" (arcade) - used a rotary controller which is suitable to be emulated using the scroll wheel. See Jeff Minter's classic update on the Atari Jaguar called "Tempest 2000".

*Centuri's "Gyruss" - similar to Galaxian (or even Tempest for that matter), the gameplay involved piloting your ship in a circle as it warped to different planets and blowing up the enemies. Great techno soundtrack for its time. The arcade machine used a 360 degree rotating joystick.

*Atari's "Warlords" - great paddle game on the Atari 2600. Similar to Breakout except it went up to four players on the same screen. Each player tried destroying the other players' castle walls with a puck/ball (canon ball). Highly addictive. Would work great using Bluetooth. Atari Games (aka Midway today) updated the game with "Rampart" almost a decade later.

*Atari Games' (Midway) "720" - classic skateboarding game. Used a 360 degree joystick in the arcade. It rocked.

*Epyx/Atari's "Todd's Adventure in Slimeworld" - Great platform game that debuted on the Atari Lynx and later the Sega Genesis. Excellent multi-player potential with Bluetooth.

*MIDI Maze - the classic Atari ST platform game that ushered in the first person shooter. Later known as "Faceball 2000" on the Gameboy, Genesis, and SNES. Simple, yet addictive. Who wouldn't like shooting a happy face? Bluetooth capabilities up the wazoo.

How about driving games? They should work a treat. Steer as normal. Double tap or press back or forward to speed up and slow down. Or top part of arc is steer, bottom is speed. I think there are possibilities here.

That gives me an idea- they should make a touch screen similar to the DS
for gaming capabilities....and possibly a controller accessory.

PSP

I guess Apple starts planning to stop PSP from taking over the market. PSP portable - MP3 player, Games, Photos (view), Movies...Little bigger...

Atari 2600 games would be almost perfect. Think of it, the Atari 2600 had two types of main controllers:

1) Arcade Stick - 8 way directional joystick with 1 button = iPod Click wheel...touch the part of the wheel to go in that direction, hit the middle button to use the 1 button, or maybe press on one of the click wheel's sides.

2) Paddle Controller - A round circle that you can turn left and right for games like Breakout, Warlords, or Circus Atari, and there was a button on the side to press, thus again using the iPod's middle button or when force is used on one of the click wheel's 'button sides'

These games should run fine I would guess on any of the color iPods (past or present or future) - The Atari 2600 games are simple, fun, don't require a lot of speed, and you can control it without an external device. Bluetooth play would just plain kick ass :)

I just hope Apple reads this forum once and a while. Hell if they sold like 20 or so Atari 2600 games for the iPod for like $9 or $15 or something, hell I'd buy it. 50 cents a game? Eh? I don't think this would turn the iPod into a 'gaming console' because it would be completely be blow out of the sky by today's modern handhelds. Well unless Apple changed the iPod dramatically, which I personally don't see happening anytime in the near future. But I sure do like the sound of those Atari 2600 games...maybe that would be my sole reason to upgrade...other than my 5gb 1st gen iPod being 'special' :( Damn FireWire port is going I think.

:D Maybe It's just because I'm a retro Atari 2600 fan :p

I believe that all Atari 2600 games could work fine on the IPOD too

They better do something fast, because I am sold on buying a PSP over an iPod!

ipod games www.ipodgames.com

Does anyone know anything about these guys at ipodgames.com? Just read their article about a new game for the ipod which is 30MB in size? They say they have met with the development team and it's due out real soon.

why the hell does Apple waste R&D resources on developing games for the iPod??? why compete with PSP and Gameboy DS??? WHYWHYWHY???

Because most people who buy iPods are not real "gamers". They tend to be students and office-bound professionals who, having spent a great deal of time staring at computer screens, have developed addictions to rather simple games such as solitaire, mindsweeper, golf, and classic-type arcade games like pacman and arkanoid. A few of these people are even into chess, and would jump at the opportunity to purchase a "chessmaster 9 lite" both in order to play it and to show off their new screens to friends.

If I had an iPod video, I probably would buy a chess game with an optimized engine and attractive interface. Apple should license the "Palm Hiarcs" chess software, considered at least up until recently to be the strongest handheld game available (btw- Sigma Chess Hiarcs is currently the 'strongest' chess program available for OS X)/

Good games for the iPod might include adaptations of:
Airburst (circular click-wheel rotates paddle - link up two iPod's w/dock connector?)
Board games
Myst (original, not "real Myst")
Sokoban&Bomberman
Shanghai
Memory/Concentration w/ diff card sets
80's era arcade classics
name that tune/tap-in rhythm to music type games
party trivial pursuit (multiple choice)
educational games

I for one would like to see:
A G-Force or iTunes visualizer on the iPod screen
Volume Logic(awesome iTunes plug-in music enhancer)on the iPod itself

I guess people would feel less geeky playing a game on an iPod on a subway than they would holding a DS or PSP.

why the hell does Apple waste R&D resources on developing games for the iPod???

1. Because the screen quality on the iPod and the Nano now make it a viable proposition;

2. As a previous poster has said, there is a potentially very lucrative iTunes-provided games market to be tapped into;

3. To further broaden the appeal of the iPod device in a process of continuous improvement - both as a means of adding another dimension (and possible appeal) to new customers, and as a temptation for existing users to upgrade

4. Because they can ;)
