The 6 Million Dollar Man (1974) predates them - as they were born around that time.

Original narrative:

"Gentlemen, We can rebuild him, we have the technology. We have the capability to make the first bionic man....Better than he was before - better, stronger, faster!"

Remix of Intro

yes it was actually the 6m $ man i was thinking of ;)

that was a hilarious commercial, loved the sound effects lol - thanks for posting the link.

Wow, Target has way more desks online than I thought. Their in-store selection is way smaller. Not really sure that would be easy to find online.

I use a desk from Ikea called the "Galant" I believe, "A-style" legs, with the black/brown top. It looks really great, and I normally hate Ikea furniture. But this one works. It's a very simple desk, no goofy drawers, just a nice table top on very study legs. Looks pretty pro. It seems like it's fairly similar to the target desk you pictured, so I thought I would mention it. Here is a picture of it I just took with my iPhone. Desk looks very messy at the moment, but I've been doing a lot of work so...

Yeah I just want a simple but large desk right now. There aren't any IKEA's around here though. :(

My brother has the desk I want right now but I have new clue where it came from.

Not for people who bought x58/i7 platforms in 2008. Those are still going very strong and will be until Sandy Bridge is out (and further really). I think 2 years at the top of the line is pretty great, wouldn't you say? Even the Mac Pros were underpowered compared to the PC equivalents, the moment they came out. Four RAM slots on the quad core Mac Pro? Not overclockable? What is Apple smoking? I built a quad core i7, that is currently at 3.5 ghz, but could easily be 4. 12 gigs of 1600mhz ddr3. Smoking machine. All top of the line name brand parts with great warranties. Under a thousand dollars. Let's see Apple match that.

The only Apple machine I can buy in decent conscience is a laptop. The others are just way way too underpowered for the price. The fact you can't even change out the hard drive in an iMac is a complete deal breaker (and a design disaster). What idiot would buy something like that?

Who cares? I have one to, for games. But it doesnt run OSX. So. Who cares? If I wanted all my info: pics, videos, music, etc., on a machine that ran Widows XP, Vista, Windows 7, or whatever I would never think about an apple computer again. They will never compete in price, hardware wise vs. a self created computer that will not legally run OSX. And being that I am tired of trying to protect my data while my PC machine is slowing taken over by adware, malware and viruses that slowly destroys itself, its a moot point. If I have to reinstall on my game machine it is not that big of a deal.

Just my 2 cents. I ordered an I7 to replace my 2.66 C2D. Dec 4th. Can't wait.

What do you mean who cares? Just about everyone to some degree? Why is OSX better for pictures and movies? I find Windows 7 WAY better for movies. Go buy an AVCHD camera and try to use it on both platforms. One flies, and is sublime. One doesn't even really work at all. Windows Media Player 12 is so superior to Quicktime X, it's embarrassing for Apple. Pictures are practically a draw, since iPhoto is a ridiculously bad program, but then again the entire iLife suite is so...hopefully you aren't using that for any sort of media management or production. Music is again better on Windows. You can have iTunes on either system, but if you've ever actually tried the Zune 4.0 software (not really talking about the player, I don't have any interest in that) you would realize it's much much better than itunes. Better visuals, and actually runs super smooth, unlike iTunes choppy and terrible performance. Zune can also read your itunes directory just fine, so you can run both programs off the same library. So how is OSX better for music, videos and pictures again? I honestly can't think of a single way and you could call me a pretty heavy "power user."

Why is your Windows machine being slowly taken over by malware and viruses? What are you doing with your machines? I've used both for years and have ZERO issues with virues and malware on Windows. It's really not hard. Seems like you've either fallen victim to Apple's absurd marketing or you're doing certain things with your machine you just shouldn't be doing. There really isn't any other explanation. Don't get me wrong, I do like some things about OSX, but usability, flexibility, and value are not part of it. Hmm...so what's left? Well it looks nice, and I can write iPhone software.

So...do you still not care that you are paying pretty much a 100%+ premium for an entirely inferior machine that you have to take to teenagers at a mall if the simplest thing goes wrong?

That's what you call messy? I don't think my desk (also from Ikea, incidentally, though it's been discontinued) has been that clean since I bought it. Currently the pile of papers and other random junk (I'm pretty sure there's a Dell laptop in there somewhere) is about four inches high (10 cm if you're not in the U.S.). If I ever get my desk as clean as yours I will throw a party.

Why are you here on the forums? It would appear that Apple has nothing for you.

details

After going back and looking at this extraordinarily simple and detail free bar chart, I have decided I'm not going to put a ton of weight on this information, as I am afraid it might shatter into a million pieces. I mean, the octo mac scores only a tick over the quad. Fishy indeed.

Why are you here on the forums? It would appear that Apple has nothing for you.

Because I use Apple products every day. I am harsh on Apple lately, because they seem to be about the almighty dollar more than ever, and unfortunately too many people are lapping it up. Why should we be paying gigantic premiums for underpowered machines, that have much worse QC than Apple has in the past (seriously, what is going on in that area?) and are nearly impossible to service? I do not want to take my machine to the mall to get it fixed. Does anyone see how absurd that is? Would you want to take your car to a mall to get it fixed? Would you want to hand it over to dirty looking teenagers with attitudes?

So, my apologies if I am hard on Apple. Despite the fact they are making gobs of money (but still less than MS, which many on here fail to realize.), they are really doing a disservice to their customers. It is obvious they think we are idiots based on how they conduct their business, and it's insulting. I want them to do better, to treat us better, and to make products that don't a hundred flaws. I want to see a better OSX, that can be the media powerhouse it should be. They are just getting beaten and it's disappointing, because I would prefer to use OSX as my main machine, if possible. Unfortunately Apple's draconian policies and poor execution of hardware precludes that possibility for me.

I am here because I am still a fan however, and choose to discuss the actual reality of where they are, I don't blindly worship them, Steve Jobs, or anything about them. I simply discuss facts. And right now they are losing in many many ways.

USB is pretty much dead as far as the markets Light Peak would be used in.

USB 3.0 isn't dead at all. Lightpeak has still a while to go.

USB 3 might survive but I don't see it competeing at all with Light Peak. Frankly I'm not even convinced that USB 3 is good reliable technology.

Frankly using USB to hook up a RAID is a little odd if you ask me. It would be the worst technolgy available. That is with USB 3 competeing against todays tech not Light Peak.

Yeah this place is getting old, man. You've either got nutjobs on either end of the spectrum, and no objectivity at all, and all of them have enormous amounts of internet tough guy courage.

Too bad this place doesn't have moderators. If they actually made much of a presence in threads, it would never have gotten like this.

OS X is better for media because you can audition files within the file hierarchy.... you can't do that with windows so yet another application launch is necessary. Sure... if they are in the music and pictures folders (and it still sucks) but that stipulates a workflow so this way of working is dictated to you no??
You know what's really important?
What you do with all that speed you have there...
Could you please show us what all that speed produces by posting some of your work?
I'd like to understand where a fast computer takes precedent over just raw creative talent!

Please post since you boast about how stupid us Mac users are for spending so much on our inferior hardware...
Some links to your work would be nice. If you listen to the radio you already have heard my work on my slow, slow junky old Apple hardware that I just paid way, way too much for...
Well the worlds waiting...
Long as you got the chops it doesn't matter how fast your computer is or how much more or less you paid for it... it matters what you do with it!

No, sorry dude. This is Mac Rumors. it's all about specs, or lack there of. :D

I'm sorry, you're not allowed to like your Mac. Nevermind that you get your job done with it effortlessly and are happy with it. It's not fast enough. I can build a PC for cheaper. I can buy a tower.

65W Core 2 Quad or Clarkdale + H57/P55. Core 2 Quad will allow Apple to keep using the LGA 775 design in the lower end models.

Thanks, Eidorian. I'm not so clear on the terminology but that means it will be a mobile platform, right? And in terms of performance, would it be true to say that it will be nothing like what we're seeing with the desktop i5 quad core in the current iMac? I'm just wondering if it's worth the wait for Nehalem, after all....

Uhh, see, that's just not true - Lightpeak is AWESOME, but HOW many years away? USB 3.0 is SHIPPING, for example, in Gigabyte motherboards.

-------------------

light Peak is actually rumored to be hitting Apple products late 2010 will be in the tablet Mac as standard. Apple will be pushing light Peak hard for Ipods, Iphones, laptops and Desktops the connector is small enough for all these.

It will be one connector to replace them all USB, DVI, Displayport, Firewire, Possibly Ethernet as it supports networking.

The cables are already in limited production in China and Taiwan by intel so 2010 release is correct

EXACTLY... Please post up some of your content so the world can understand that it takes a fast computer to do talented, gifted and inspirational work...
Again... please set us strait on this faster is better thing.
And by the way... I'm very happy with my Mac(s) and you hear what they do everyday on the radio...
They are tools to accomplish a goal.
Let's see some of yours...

You bring up an important point.

USB 3.0 isn't dead at all. Lightpeak has still a while to go.

I need speed AND reliability. My Macbook Pro was a perfectly suitable desktop replacement until it started spazzing out from being overworked. I just can't trust a machine with miniaturized components squashed sardine-style behind a giant, glass-covered monitor. If "thinness" had anything to do with a computer's design process, it's probably not good for professional work.

How the iMac i7s perform after 4 to 8 hours of usage is very important. That is will they termall throttle under heavy load. All this bench marking means nothing if you can't get consitant performance. Unfortunately I've yet to see a benchmarker specifically test for this.

Reliability is another issue. To be honest I've been happy with my recent Apple hardware. I guess I'm not that demanding. Either that or your MBP has issues that are not normal, as it should also throttle when thermally overloaded.

not true i just been on Dells website and spec a unit to same spec as Mac Pro and the Dell is more expensive!!!!

It's all desktop hardware unless Apple decides to go back to mobile processors.

LGA 1156 for future Nehalem/Westmere products or Core 2 Quad for LGA 775 based ones.

This is more like it

In a previous post on the earlier story showing a 35% boost of the i7 iMac over the i5, I pointed out that thse results, based on a synthetic benchmark, were likely illusory in view of real world analyses of these two chips on the PC side of the fence. There was a great deal of resistance to my observation that it was unlikely that the i7, even with hyperthreading was unlikely to achieve much more than a 7 to 12% boost, and certainly not 35%. These results bear these comments out. I'm glad to see some reasonability is finally creeping back into the debate regarding the relative value of the two quad core systems. I still believe that the Core i5 system may be a better value for most end users in view of the fact that one can the double the RAM on the i5 with the $200 savings, and still have money to purchase a 1 TB external hard drive for use with Time Machine.

I also counseled that there might be some unwanted or unanticipated bugs that might appear in the quad core systems due to the fact that they constitute almost entirely new hardware configurations for the iMac. Sadly, I have discovered this to be true in that it is not currently possible to install Windows 7 under Boot Camp without the use of a second monitor and without the use of Parallels 5.0 to complete the installation. Apple Care has assured me that an updated firmware and new drivers should be issued by the end of 2009, but this remains to be seen. Evidently, there is also some difficulty in installing Windows 7 on the new 21 inch Core2Duo iMacs.

If you don't need to upgrade right away, it might be prudent to wait a few months until new firmware and drivers are available and after the cost/benefit underpinnings of the new iMac models are fully understood. Caveat emptor!

Huh? You have a datapoint of one: a dead notebook. From that you extrapolate that any computer that doesn't contain huge cavernous empty space must be not good for professional work?! Again, huh?

A computer doesn't "spazz" out from "overwork". Sustained high temperatures can reduce the life span of the processor and other chips, but Apple design cooling systems to cater for that. Most modern chips and processors can handle a minimum of 85degC, and you'll find the temperatures inside the laptop are lower than that.

Why can't you trust miniaturised components? Better stick to your UNIVAC then. And what's any of that got to do with a "giant, glass-covered monitor"? Seems like that's what you really dislike.

lol at Jordan Fish. Every computer has been miniturised ever since computers were as large as entire rooms. Making them smaller has been happening from the beginning of computing history.
