Has to be a bigger iPhone and not a "book" computer... that's my prediction. A virtual KB just like the iPhone.

I would agree. Unless, maybe, it's more like Penny's computer book in the old "Inspector Gadget" series? The cover actually serving as nothing but a protective shield when closed?

MacTouch
$899
WILL have keyboard, but can be used as a tablet with touch keyboard.
1.8 GHz, 1Mb RAM

Limited power/memory will prevent it from competing with Macbooks.

OH- and there will be a "new" feature unique to it that no other Apple product has.... further enticing current iMac/Macbook customers to want to buy it.

It would be great if Apple worked out a deal with At&t to allow iPhones free 3G tethering to this device. At a price point between $700-$800 that would get me to buy one.

Intel Core 2 Duo based
32 GB SSD
2GB ram or more
USB
10" 1280x800
full OS X
physical keyboard
all standard apps
G3 wifi via AT&T built in
$899

but that won't happen because it's too close to a MBA and I'm not sure it could be done for $899

They could do that with the 3g att stuff. I'm really hoping they don't do that though...

Possibly with a regular HD, 2ghz CD/C2D 2gb ram. I really like the 2:2, but they could get away with 1gb. @ $25 does it make a difference?

Does anyone think we'll see the Docking Station idea? They did file a Paton a while back...

GOOD!

So now we get a screen size--10".

The guy in the article keeps saying "netbook" but he has no specific idea of what Apple is making. I somehow doubt Apple will make a laptop design with a touch screen... could be wrong though.

My hopes are that the "netbook" is a tablet and can run iWork/iLife and other lower power apps. using a version of OSX. If it is under $1000 I will be surprised.

i bet this is going to be a 10" tablet that looks like a iphone mixed with a imac. portable and clean looking. although i hope it's not going to get a glossy screen, it may look cooler. but it wil get dirty all the time!

about the os, it may get a normal osx i guess. or a different os, maybe something like dashboard.

Last night before the word of the 10" screen, I thought it might be as big as 13" and could possibly be docked on a computer (mini) and used as a monitor. However, with a 10" screen, I doubt it will be like that. The dock might park it so it sits at an angle where the user can link with a keyboard and use it as a desktop type computer.

Somehow my gut feeling says it will just be a large iPod Touch with a little extra power. Hopes + Apple = constant disappointment.

I just don't see Apple competing at netbook price points.

But I don't quite get the point of netbooks personally either. Just big enough to not be truly portable, just small enough to be under powered and difficult to use.

But hey, that's just me. People seem to be buying the Windows/Linux ones, so what do I know? I just find it hard to believe Apple will sell anything for less than $599.

$499 or less and I am def there. I'd LOVE a small machine to take with me everywhere. Especially back and forth from my daily home-->work-->school routine. :)

Need for learning Cocoa Touch, increasing...
That's what iPhone costs alone. In no way would the future netbook be priced the same, more like $799.

Do you think this could replace a Wacom tablet?

This is another obscene hope of mine. If it can do nice stylus recognition and run Photoshop, there is little reason to use/buy a large and expensive Cintiq anymore. That means it needs a fairly good processor and OS.

Again, this is a hope. Hope + Apple = constant disappointment.

I believe Apple will have a hard nut to crack...

Being apple it has to be stylish and to provide that something extra. This together with the fact that it will be small will put it too expensive I am afraid...

Whatever Apple does in the long run and always found that they surprise me in how they tackle a project so I am really looking forward for this...

Certainly isomething. iphonepro??

Hopefully will compliment the iphone and be closer to it than to a mac

I already have a MBP that is portable. If I really want something ultra-portable to surf the net with, I am more than happy with my iPod Touch. Unless this is $499 or less, I would have no interest in this.

net BOOKS I don't get either. But, they are cheap and can connect people on the run. It's the happy meal version of a notebook, which probably makes some people feel like they stepped up in the world. The notebook design makes sense, but it is irritating.

Now, a TABLET with pen recognition and multi-touch I do get. You can walk around and actually use this thing without having to open it up, prop it up, use hands to type while putting down the laptop, etc.

$1099. I'll be the first to dash the hopes of fanboys before Apple ever does. It won't be under $999.

I just want a large ipod touch to use while I'm sitting on the couch, etc.

If I want to do real computing I'll go to my desk and use my imac. But if I want to skim the news headlines or check a box score while I'm watching a game, a large ipod would be the best way.

The current ipod touch is way too small. I don't care if it fits in my pocket, because it's only useful at home due to no 3G.

If they want an instant sale, they have to make sure it can play video from all websites (hulu, netflix, nba league pass).

Based on this new information, it appears that Apple is targeting a ~10" screen size for this Netbook.
10"? Wow. That's quite on the high side for an iPhone OS based device, so from that information it looks like the netbook or whatever will run Mac OS X.

If we look at the past few years of these rumors, we get a device around 5.5", to a device around 8", to a device around 10". I guess either some of the rumors are wrong or Apple is constantly changing the prototypes.

Has to be a bigger iPhone and not a "book" computer... that's my prediction. A virtual KB just like the iPhone.
That's also what I'm predicting. The large displays would be taken advantage of by things like multitasking and more complex apps (mobile versions of iLife/iWork). The price would likely be lower than a Mac OS X netbook/mini-tablet.

Please DON'T Let this have a physical keyboard.

I love the iphone's keyboard and considering its size it does a good job.

I want an ultra portable machine which is not incumbered with add ons

+1. In my view, the advantages of a physical keyboard are more than offset by the advantages of a virtual one: you can get a much larger screen in a much smaller form factor, plus a virtual keyboard can be infinitley modified to meet different software requirements. Give all of that up for the pleasure of clanking away on plastic keys? No thanks. Espscially for a portable device which, if needs be, I could plug a plastic keyboard into if I really, really missed the old-fashioned way of doing things. Apple's "big mistake" would be remaining tied to a 200 year-old IO paradigm.

What are you smoking? $900 doesn't buy you a normal laptop with a 2.4 C2D and a 200GB drive, for that you need to pay $1599. If you want all of that and a touchscreen, look closer to the $2000 range. If Apple came out with something in the $900 range that was touch-based, expect Atom processors and best case scenario a 64GB flash drive, with the option of a 128GB for more. Apple prices their stuff more equivalently than that.

jW

Pot. That's what I'm smoking. The same stuff SJ did when he created a reasonable computer for the common man. You know, the stuff they used to make.

No, I'm joking. I just wanted to get that out of my system.

You're right. For some reason I thought the 2.4's where priced where the 2.0 CDs are now....

Maybe some of those new Dual Core Atom-like stuff. I'd be happy with that an a 16gb SSD. These aren't meant to be stand along computers.
