LOL. If I am reading the part number on the sticky correctly M8719Z/A it appears to be that of OS X Server 10.2 M8719Z/A. Check Google.

I think that's a B not an 8, personally, but otherwise you are correct. Could just be an old sticker lying around he scanned and used for the fake, but you'd think if they were gonna do all that they'd move some numbers around on it...

Yeah, I would expect that too, but the B doesn't fit the pattern of Apple part numbers (M+4 numbers) and the Z/A suffix seems to usually be used for software. It could be a reference to the firmware on the system, but I tend to doubt it.

So maybe it's the media server some have been hoping for. ;)

it looks like it says MB719Z/A to me...but i could be wrong...the M at the beginning of the part number looks suspicious, almost as if it had been written in...

Or it could be numberings that Apple uses internally for prototypes or mockups, etc. Or it could be a system the company who manufactures it uses... or it could be anything or nothing at all.

This is fun. :) Reminds me of the pre-nano speculation and guessing. :)

Certainly possible, they could even have thrown the sticker on there to throw us off.

I still maintain that the limitations of the picture may have more to do with compression and the camera than photoshopping.

The story has been picked up on Page 2. Do I sense a thread merge?

Well, it seems like we have at least established that this COULD be real. It's not conclusive at all, but it isn't a complete and obvious fake. So rather than go back and forth about if it is, let's entertain the notion that it IS real for a moment and speculate WHAT it is.

My guess: a next generation PDA. A PDA for younger, non business users. A FUN PDA.

A Video iPod with a touch screen interface and a full set of iLife type apps, plus iCal, AddressBook, Safari, Mail, and iChat.

I've suspected since the Intel announcement that they were eyeballing not only the Yonah and Memrom chips for laptops, but XScale chips for next gen iPods. I could probably find a post of mine from last summer to that effect.

The XScale is a pretty decent unit, both cost-wise, power usage, and in overall performance. Add in one of the ATI GPUs that some PDAs are sporting now and you would have a helluva little machine.

Anyone know if Darwin compiles on the XScale/StrongARM architecture? Would be cool it was "based on OS X" so apps were at least somewhat portable from Macs to the new Newton here.

If I'm right, I'll be sad, cuz I won't be able to afford one, or even justify one if I had the money. :(

EDIT: Who am I kidding... of course I'd find the money to buy this. ;-)

I stand corrected, and it looks like they are using "A" as 10 in their model numbers as all the recent iPods are MAXXX. So it would make sense that MB would be next. The Z/A suffix still bugs me since that does seem to be more usually seen with software.

Is there any speculation on the price or size of this device if it infact is not a fake?

Assuming it's not that different from a 5G, about half the cost of the device is in the hard drive, so it all depends on the size of the drive, and the added cost from the larger (touch sensitive?) display, minus the cost of the clickwheel.

Basically don't expect if for less than $300.

lol this is crazy...Does Apple have guards in the like of Taiwan and other third world countries....why doesn't this stuff leak faster

Within Apple, it's a lot easier to keep something like this secret than new Macs - since Macs require extensive testing, plus international testing in Cork and Tokyo (I think), which means more people see them and they're more likely to be spotted in transit. Devices like the iPod on the other hand can be tested in one lab in Cupertino with very, very limited access, hence the secrecy is easier to maintain.

Once it goes to a 3rd party, Apple have far less control. In my experience, they try to maintain secrecy to keep Apple happy, but nowhere near the extent of Apple's neuroses. That's why I'm surprised Apple doesn't try to keep even more production in-house.

If it is just 5 days I guess the impact of the leak, that everyone is still debating over btw, is negilable.

True, though tell that to ATI who were dropped at the 11th hour when they leaked the announcement of a PowerMac just the day before Steve's keynote.

True. Easier to switch graphics cards than to ditch an entire product line... though I shouldn't talk to loud *cough* Asteroid *cough* :D

How come the "prototype" iPods always have funny characters, symbols, and random stickers all over them?

The one of the video iPod and this one look like they're laying on top of similar material.

I only hope that if this is real, it comes with some type of mobile OS X and can do other things besides the traditional ipods can do! :D

Its VERY good if its fake.......... Look at the bottom left of the screen, at the white bar - it looks like its reflecting on the white plastic.

And as a previous poster said, the picture itself looks identical to the leaked 5G video iPod image.

i was just going to say that! the white bar is def reflecting on the plastic... this thing could be real!

You'd be surprised just how rough and "pieced together" prototype machines can look. I can remember the "TiBook" prototypes being loose motherboards in a big acrylic-glass box the size of a big phone book; and then being amazed watching the keynote to see the slimness of the finished product. The less pretty and eye-catching they look in the labs, the better. Plus the tags are obviously necessary given the lack of any other identifying features to differentiate between prototype devices.

Now look what you've done! by mentioning "The A******* Word We Dare Not Mention", it's going to be postponed again! Kill the thread, cancel the event.. Diatribe has spoilt the party... :D

Nice "Home made" iPod. Look VERYYYYYY closely at EVERYTHING. It IS a fake iPod, even if they release one that looks exactly like that one, this one is fake.
