Ok, so where could I get 8GB for my iMac in the UK and online ?

Good question. I don't even know where one would get them here in Japan! I have yet to see even 4GB DDR2 SO-DIMMs much less 8GB. There do seem to be some specialized brands of desktop RAM in that configuration available though.

It will still be cheaper than buying a Mac Pro.

Not necessarily. The abovementioned desktop parts I mentioned start at about $1000 US each.

Ideally, if you have need of more total system RAM you're probably going to be better off with a system that has more memory slots for smaller denominations (like a Mac Pro). Even when those larger-sized parts hit the market they won't be cheap.

Good point

You have a good point there. If only there would be a good compromise  Any rumors of Apple selling the Mac Pro together with a screen ? It would then be probably cheaper.

Aaaaah crap.

Anybody heard about the "Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor - TCO03" ? Any good ? It looks better in features compared to the ACD.

Nobody ? or another better display that is cheaper than a Apple Cinema Display ?

I had a 20" Dell widescreen LCD a few years ago and it was excellent. In fact, at the time I recall that it used the exact same LCD panel as the ACD of the time.

But perhaps you should start another thread if you want to discuss displays. You're likely to get a much better response.

Also, you could google the model number of the Dell and reviews as well.

I looked at reviews and watched videos about it. I think I will go for it. I also started a thread on it.

Cheers.

I contacted a major memory company and asked them for 2 chips of 4GB each for my latest iMac 3.06. Still no answer but as soon as I get news, I will post here.

Anyone tried this yet

Anyone actually tried this yet? Here's a single 4GB PC6400 800MHz SODIMM:

http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT51264AC800

Crucial also has an 8GB pair. The iMac 3.06 isn't dual channel so you should be able to use 4+1=5GB and 4+2=6GB configurations with no penalty provided the system recognizes the 4GB part and allows more than 4GB total.

We already know what the documents say (read the last 2 pages of redundant posts). Please leave a note if you've tried it indicating your success or if you had problems.

Cheers and thanks from everyone reading,

NO body has more than 4GB of RAM on their iMac 3.06

I guess no body has more than 4GB of RAM on their imac 3.06 because no body has confirmed it works.

I decided to risk it and buy a 4GB module. I can confirm it works perfectly in my April 2008 3.06GHz iMac. I am now using 6GB, and have tested it fully by filling it up and then emptying it again. 6GB is great! I was regularly filling 4GB.

I bought the 667 module from OWC. My 2GB is an 800 but they run fine together the 2GB just runs at 667. There is a negligible speed loss, you can't notice it.

Has anyone upgraded to 8GB using the same principle that was employed to upgrade to the 6GB?

I would have tried 8GB, but from what I have read, the hardware is just not capable of supporting 8GB. I think the OS might recognise it but you'll have big problems when the OS tries to use it. So unless you have one of the recent 2009 iMacs, 8GB is a no go. 6GB is most that will work in a pre-09 iMac.
